Work Text:
God only knew what time it was.
God only knew why Sakyo was still awake, staring at the ceiling.
After sighing and rolling onto his side for the umpteenth time that night, Sakyo accepted that sleep just wouldn’t come.
And then the form next to him stirred. “Everything okay?” Azuma blinked awake. Sakyo’s tossing and turning in the bed they shared disrupted the otherwise quiet 206, alerting Azuma to his boyfriend’s sleepless night.
That was exactly what Sakyo didn’t want to happen. “I’m fine, go back to sleep,” he grumbled.
It was dark, so he couldn’t see for sure, but he could swear Azuma smiled when he replied, “Mmm, wrong answer.”
Sakyo turned over to face the other man. “Don’t worry about it,” he insisted. Best if they both ignored it and at least one of them got some sleep tonight. Still, there was the fact that he was currently in bed with the person in the company best equipped to handle sleepless nights, so there might actually be hope for him tonight.
Raising his hand to stroke Sakyo’s cheek, Azuma spoke again. “Just tell me and save us both some time.”
Cue sigh number umpteen-and-one. “I think we should tell Bon about – us.” Huh. He did feel lighter after confiding in Azuma. Something he’d done a number of times already. And yet, it surprised him every time just how at ease he could be around someone else.
An ease Sakyo relished in as Azuma brushed some blond hair away from his forehead and spoke. “Are you sure? That’s big. I know how important he is to you.”
“Yes, I’m sure, that’s obviously why I can’t sleep –” Maybe it wasn’t the best idea to be sarcastic right now. Azuma usually had a way of seeing through it anyway. Sakyo took a breath and continued to come clean. “No, I’m not. Well, I know I want to, but I don’t know how it’ll go.”
“Hmm… let’s see…..” Azuma moved to lay squarely on his back as he thought. “Something like… ‘How shameless, you shitty four-eyes, I don’t want to hear about it, blah blah’.... How did I do?”
Sakyo snorted. “Aren’t you supposed to be comforting me?”
“This, from the man who denied being upset a minute ago?”
“I’ve matured since then,” Sakyo claimed with a huff.
The gentle laugh that comment elicited from Azuma was almost enough to quell Sakyo’s anxious heart.
“But really, as much as he may yell about improper courtship behavior….. He loves you, Sakyo-kun. He won’t say it, of course, but… I think, if you’re happy, he’ll be happy for you.”
Sakyo sat up in bed, not knowing what to do with the nervous energy that made its way into his chest. Everything Azuma was saying made sense, of course, but something still felt….off. “And you don’t think he’ll be bothered by the fact that I – that we – we’re men?”
“Oh…” So it was about that too. “He doesn’t know that you’re gay?”
“Never really came up. But in the Family we don’t…” He cleared his throat. “We don’t talk about it. And I get the feeling he wouldn’t have wanted to hear about my love life anyway. Might’ve made shit easier now though.”
Well, that much made sense. Azuma himself never really had the chance to be… anything other than what he was expected – or perhaps it was more accurate to say assumed – to be until he was living on his own. “Can I say what I think?” He grasped Sakyo’s closest hand, offering him an anchor to keep him from floating away with his worry.
Sakyo hummed an affirmative.
“I think that perhaps, it may change how Azami sees you a bit, yes. But I remember how well he got along with Kazunari, how Kazu would send him trending makeup looks and such, and brought him to work on the fashion work at Veludo Arts. And when he started dating Tsuzuru, Azami came around to them. He did nag them about PDA, but this is still Azami we’re talking about.” He couldn’t read Azami’s mind of course, but despite his attitude, Azami’s feelings of admiration towards other people were sometimes quite transparent.
“And he likes you a lot already…” Sakyo said under his breath.
“That’s one thing going for us,” Azuma nodded, and something else came to mind. “Hey, what do you tell him when you spend the night here anyway?”
“Drinking party, sometimes mahjong. I think he just assumes that I pass out on your couch after too much sake, honestly.”
“Only twice, fufu~”
“And I’ll never live it down,” Sakyo sighed, burying his face in the hand that wasn’t entwined with Azuma’s.
“Maybe I should tell him I make you moisturize before I pour you a glass…” Azuma joked to himself.
In the dark of the room, Sakyo smiled. “Nah, he’d check…”
Azuma smiled back and rubbed the back of Sakyo’s hand with his thumb. “Then maybe I’ll have to follow through.” Leaning in closer, he continued, “You can keep talking if you want, but why don’t you lay with me? I’m right here, I’ll be here until the morning. I’ve got you.”
He had to know what that did to Sakyo’s heart, right? How it tugged him back down to the pillow, led by his heartstrings? As Sakyo laid back down, Azuma enveloped him in his arms and nestled his face in the crook of Sakyo’s neck.
“...How are you so good at getting me to relax like this? Why does this feel so good every time?” Sakyo muttered, astonished.
“Gee, I don’t know, it’s not like I did this professionally or anything,” Azuma teased.
“Oi, remind me again how I snagged the most eligible bachelor in Veludo?”
“Because I have a thing for blondes with glasses, fufu.”
“Like it’s an extremely specific type?”
“No, the extremely specific type is glasses-wearing blondes in the yakuza who are good with finances, but I thought I’d never meet one. Look at us now.”
“Yeah, look at us.” Sakyo smiled to himself. Sometimes he did just that, and wondered how the universe decided he could have something this good. Between Mankai, Azuma, and watching Azami work towards his dreams too, Sakyo couldn’t imagine anything better.
Except getting to share his relationship with the rest of his chosen family. Maybe Azuma was right, and everything would be fine, but for now, he could finally rest easy.
