Chapter Text
What is Pureblood Culture?
Pureblood Culture is the name for the cumulative set of historical magical customs and traditions that are part of everyday life for the magicals of Avalon.
What is Avalon?
Avalon is the magical haven that Mother Magic created for British Magicals when Muggles began killing magicals wholesale in historical times. It’s essentially a magical dimension that’s a half-step out of sync with the Muggle World. Muggles literally cannot enter Avalon.
Avalon was created in the fifth century. Arthur Pendragon was named High King in the latter part of that century.
All magical estates bestowed by Mother Magic exist within the boundaries of Avalon.
Does Avalon have a religion?
Magicals worship Mother Magic and Chaos.
Who is Mother Magic?
Once called “Magic”, Mother Magic is the source of magic in Avalon. She’s worshiped as a deity by the magicals because without her gifts they would not have magic.
Any children literally birthed by Mother Magic (always daughters) are given the surname “le Fay”. Morgan le Fay (Morgana) is her eldest daughter.
Another notable daughter of Mother Magic is Isolda le Fay (the bonded lady-wife of High Lord Godric Gryffindor).
Who is Chaos?
Chaos is The Most High Deity.
Chaos has only Created two sons. Myrddin Emrys (Merlin), the eldest, and Salazar Slytherin.

What are the titles of the aristocracy in Avalon?
Royal Titles:
- His Royal Majesty King (Name)
- Her Royal Majesty Queen (Name)
- His Royal Highness Prince (Name)
- Her Royal Highness Princess (Name)
Oligarchy Titles:
- The Paterfamilias of the family is High Lord (Surname).
- The Materfamilias of the family is High Lady (Surname).
- The person next in line to inherit would be either High Heir (Surname) or High Heiress (Surname).
- If the High Heir is bonded, his spouse gains the High Heiress (Surname) or High Heir-Consort (Surname) title.
- If the High Heiress is bonded, her spouse gains the High Heir (Surname) or High Heiress-Consort (Surname) title.
- If the High Heir/Heiress has children, the oldest who will inherit is High Master (Surname) or High Lady (First Name).
- Second daughters, etc. can be called High Lady (First Name) but never High Lady (Surname) as that’s the Materfamilias.
- Second sons, etc. can be called High Lord (First Name) but never High Lord (Surname) as that’s the Paterfamilias.
- Non-binary individuals receive the title of High Wixen (Surname) or High Wixen (First Name) depending on whether the person is head of the family or in line to inherit.
The Most Ancient Houses’ Titles:
- The Paterfamilias of the family is Lord (Surname).
- The Materfamilias of the family is Lady (Surname).
- The person next in line to inherit would be either Heir (Surname) or Heiress (Surname).
- If the Heir is bonded, his spouse gains the Heiress (Surname) or Heir-Consort (Surname) title.
- If the Heiress is bonded, her spouse gains the Heir (Surname) or Heiress-Consort (Surname) title.
- If the Heir/Heiress has children, the oldest who will inherit is Master (Surname) or Lady (First Name).
- Second daughters, etc. can be called Lady (First Name) but never Lady (Surname) as that’s the Materfamilias.
- Second sons, etc. can be called Lord (First Name) but never Lord (Surname) as that’s the Paterfamilias.
- Non-binary individuals receive the title of Wixen (Surname) or Wixen (First Name) depending on whether the person is head of the family or in line to inherit.
Attributed Houses’ Titles:
- The Paterfamilias of the family is Lord (Surname).
- The Materfamilias of the family is Lady (Surname).
- The person next in line to inherit would be either Heir (Surname) or Heiress (Surname).
- Any additional children would be called Lord (First Name)/Mister (Surname) or Lady (First Name)/Miss (Surname).
- Non-binary individuals receive the title of Wix (Surname) or Wix (First Name) depending on whether the person is head of the family or in line to inherit.
Unattributed Houses’ Titles:
- The Paterfamilias of the family is Mister (Surname).
- The Materfamilias of the family is Missus (Surname).
- Any children would be called Mister (First Name) or Miss (First Name).
- Non-binary individuals receive the title of Wix (Surname) or Wix (First Name) depending on whether the person is head of the family or in line to inherit.
Using a person’s (First Name) version of the title indicates a personal relationship of some sort. It’s very bad manners to use a pureblood’s given name without first receiving permission. The exception to this is when the (First Name) version is their only title.
New Bloods receive a general courtesy title of “Mister” or “Miss” or “Wix” after being recognized as such by Mother Magic.
What is an Attribute and how does a bloodline become Attributed?
After a pureblood family has been faithful to the tenets of magical society for five hundred consecutive years, during which time they feed magic and blood to a wardstone that will protect their future estate in Avalon, Mother Magic will grant the family an Attribute which brings their wardstone and family magic to sentience. By doing this, a barony is bestowed on the family.
The Attribute is an adjective that describes the overall feel of the bloodline’s magic.
The Blacks are Attributed as “Noble”, the Potters as “Honorable”, the Malfoys as “Vigilant”, and so forth.
How do titles work in Pureblood Culture and where do they come from?
All magical titles are bestowed by Mother Magic or Chaos. Any lands associated with the title are located in Avalon itself, not Magical Britain.
All of the Oligarchy Houses are archduchies. All of the Ancient Houses are duchies. An Attributed House that has been established for 750+ years becomes a viscountcy. A freshly Attributed House at 500 years becomes a barony.
In rare instances, a title has been awarded and bestowed for great acts of service to Avalon.
What specific titles are established as Pureblood Culture “canon”?
- The Potter Dukedom is the Dukedom of The Eternal Eyrie.
- The Heir/Heiress of the Potter Dukedom holds the subsidiary title of Earl/Countess of The Blood Moors.
- One of the Potter Dukedom’s subsidiary titles is Baron/Baroness of Potter Fields.
- When it’s a Fae Culture story, The Potter Heir/Heiress holds the subsidiary title Marquess/Marchioness of The Fae Meadow.
- In the “here is the deepest secret” ‘verse only, because she’ll be the Mother of Merlin’s reincarnation, Lady Haesel Potter holds the magical title of Archduchess of Caerfyrddin.
- The Black Dukedom is the Dukedom of The Misty Isles.
- One of the subsidiary titles for the Black Dukedom is Baron/Baroness of The Opal Mines.
- The Prewett Dukedom is the Dukedom of Heartfire Haven.
- The Heir/Heiress of the Flint Dukedom holds the subsidiary title of Earl/Countess of The Westering Woods.
- The Heir/Heiress of the Greengrass Dukedom holds the subsidiary title of Earl/Countess of The Immortal Falls.
- The Heir/Heiress of the Malfoy Dukedom holds the subsidiary title of Earl/Countess of The Silver Isle.
- Whomsoever possesses all three Deathly Hallows is automatically High Lord or High Lady or High Wixen of Eternal Death and High Lord or High Lady or High Wixen Peverell.
- The Peverell Archduchy is the Archduchy of The Infinite Crypt.
- The Lestrange Dukedom is the Dukedom of Everdark Vale.
- The Heir/Heiress of the Lestrange Dukedom holds the subsidiary title of Earl/Countess of The Labyrinthine Caves.
- The second in line to inherit the Lestrange Dukedom holds the subsidiary title of Viscount/Viscountess of The Whispering Marsh.
What happens to a title if the last member of a bloodline bonds into a family that holds a higher title?
The lesser title would be folded into the older family’s bloodline and be used as a subsidiary title for future children.
What goes into running a pureblood estate?
Generally, when I reference a pureblood estate, I mean all of their lands and abodes, both in Avalon and those without.
The Most Ancient Houses are all duchies. Each duchy has at least one magical village as well as agriculture/magical creatures they are responsible for. (Such as the Blacks raising and breeding Raven-Cloven Sheep.)
Newer magical bloodlines aren’t Attributed and don’t own estates yet, so they need somewhere to live, which established bloodlines are expected to provide in the form of a magical village. The magicals who have permission to live on their land are required to abide by any specific laws set for their estate. Breaking said laws can result in total eviction from the estate.
The magicals living there pay taxes and such for use of the land.
The estate owners and their family are responsible for maintaining the wards and can offer occupational opportunities as necessary to magicals who live on their land. Though, said magicals can also lease land and shops to create a business.
The Potters have vast fields of potions ingredients at Potter Fields and a Griffin Sanctuary at the Eternal Eyrie. Similarly, the Longbottoms have fields and greenhouses where they cultivate flowers and magical plants for sale. And there is absolutely a Firedrake Preserve on the Prewett Estate of Heartfire Haven.
Was The Royal and Most Beloved House of Pendragon created with Avalon, or did it exist prior to Avalon?
It was originally an Oligarchy House. When Mother Magic created Avalon, She elevated the bloodline and renamed it The Royal and Most Beloved House of Pendragon. Then, she chose a High King and High Queen from the bloodline.
Was Arthur the first High King of Avalon in the Pureblood Culture ‘verse?
No, he was not the first Pendragon to be chosen as High King of Avalon. Though, he was a member of the royal bloodline when he was chosen.
In the Pureblood Culture ‘verse, did King Arthur rule Camelot and Avalon?
King Arthur ruled both Avalon and Camelot. Camelot is actually in Avalon. It’s the Royal Seat.
What are the duties of an Oligarchy House?
Oligarchy houses guide/lead Avalon in the absence of duly appointed royalty. However, their main purpose is to serve as Sentinels. They are responsible for protecting the magicals of Avalon as well as Magical Britain.
What led to the Oligarchy Houses going defunct?
Illness/war/old age/etc. All of the bloodlines have existing descendants who, if they meet certain requirements, can reclaim the title and family name. The family magic remains intact as the deities Who founded the bloodlines remain alive.
Which Deities founded which Oligarchy Houses?
- Fate founded the Brave and Most Olde House of Gryffindor.
- Death founded the Hallowed and Most Olde House of Peverell.
- Chaos founded the Just and Most Olde House of Slytherin.
I haven't decided on the others yet.
What is a Paterfamilias? What is a Materfamilias?
The Paterfamilias is the male head of the bloodline. The Materfamilias is the female head of a bloodline. They have the power to create alliances, issue edicts on behalf of the entire family, magically disown someone from the family, etc.
What would happen if a Paterfamilias or Materfamilias turned into a Squib?
The actions of the Paterfamilias and Materfamilias reflect on the entire family. So, the family magic their ancestors spent centuries building and nurturing would be stripped from the entire family. The individual members would still have their own individual magic, but the family magic would be gone and they would have to start entirely from scratch.
It would be an enormous blow socially.
How are secondary bloodlines and branch lines organized?
Okay, so I’ll use this graphic as an example. Assuming the story takes place in the Marauder Era, it would be as follows:
Arcturus Black is the Lord and Paterfamilias of the family. Melania is the Lady and Materfamilias. Lucretia was Heiress Black until she bonded into the Prewett family, at which point Orion Black became Heir Black, instead of Master Black. As his oldest child, Sirius becomes Master Black at birth. Until Sirius bonds and has a child, Regulus is considered his heir (as the one who would inherit next).
Everyone within seven places of inheriting the dukedom (that’s not the direct eldest of the main line) is considered secondary main line.
The list of secondary main line Blacks using this family tree would be: Regulus Black, Pollux Black, Cygnus Black, (Bellatrix, Andromeda, Narcissa, if they were unbonded), etc.
Anyone who is more distant than that is considered to be from a branch bloodline.
The canon Weasleys are from a branch of the family. So, any kids any of the boys have will also be branch families.
What is a family motto?
A family motto is the phrase that a pureblood family has chosen to represent their outlook/beliefs as a bloodline in its entirety. It’s customary for a family to have a public motto and a private or secret motto (which they hold close to their hearts).
What family mottos are considered Pureblood Culture “canon”?
(The first three public mottos are taken directly from Harry Potter canon.)
- The Noble and Most Ancient House of Black Public Motto: Toujours Pur. Always pure.
- The Noble and Most Ancient House of Black Secret Motto: Numquam proditorem patiemur vivere. We will never suffer a traitor to live.
- The Fearless and Most Ancient House of Lestrange Public Motto: Corvus oculum corvi non eruit. A crow will not pull out the eye of another crow. (It refers to complete solidarity amongst a group of like-minded people regardless of consequences.)
- The Vigilant and Most Ancient House of Malfoy Public Motto: Sanctimonia vincet semper. Purity always conquers.
- The Honorable and Most Ancient House of Potter Public Motto: Honora usque in finem. Honor until the end.
- The Honorable and Most Ancient House of Potter Secret Motto: Ultionem plenissimam. Revenge to the fullest.
- The Diligent House of Diggory Public Motto: Semper in fide. Always loyal.
- The Dedicated House of Bones Public Motto: Per dedicationem perseveramus. We persevere through dedication.
What is a coat of arms or family crest?
I use these terms interchangeably. It’s in the shape of an armored shield and contains the public family motto as well as magical creatures, etc., that have particular meaning to the family at the time of its creation.
What are heraldry colors?
Heraldry colors are a Pureblood House’s officially recognized colors. These are the colors members of that bloodline wear to galas and other formal events.
It’s extremely poor manners to wear clothing that is done entirely in another Pureblood House’s heraldry colors.
What are the established heraldry colors for Pureblood Culture “canon”?
- Black: Black
- Carrow: Cerulean
- Crouch: Cobalt
- Greengrass: Verdant
- Longbottom: Evergreen
- Malfoy: Ice-blue
- Potter: Crimson
- Slytherin: Emerald
- Parkinson: Violet
- Pendragon: Ruby
- Peverell: Blood-Red
- Gryffindor: Scarlet
- Hufflepuff: Citrine
- Ravenclaw: Sapphire
How does blood status work in Pureblood Culture ‘verse?
Canon Harry Potter establishes that all “Muggle-borns” are actually just descendants of Squibs that were cast out. Magic can’t come from two non-magical people. A New Blood is someone descended from Squibs cast from Avalon that has made covenants with Mother Magic and received Her acknowledgment.
- Pureblood/Pureblood = Pureblood
- Pureblood/New Blood = Pureblood
- Pureblood/Muggle = Possible New Blood
- Squib/Squib = Possible New Blood
- Squib/Muggle = Possible New Blood
- Squib’s descendant/Squib’s descendant = Possible New Blood
- Squib’s descendant/Muggle = Possible New Blood
- Half-bloods don’t exist in Pureblood Culture ‘verse.
What is a Squib?
A magical who has been stripped of their magic for committing a grievous crime.
What causes someone to become a Squib?
If Mother Magic strips someone’s magic from them, they become a Squib. It’s not something that occurs often, only as a result of profane circumstances (such as successfully love potioning someone, etc.).
Some Black Magic Rituals (such as laying the bloodline curse on the Black family) costs the petitioner their magic and renders them a Squib.
Can Squibs go into Avalon?
No. Squibs are magically banished from Avalon. They literally can’t enter it.
What is a New Blood?
A New Blood is the term used for a Squib’s descendant (Muggle-born) who’s born with magic who enters Magical Britain and learns the requisite customs and traditions of Avalon. Upon being acknowledged by Mother Magic and achieving status as a New Blood, they are, in essence, a pureblood.
What are the steps required to be recognized by Mother Magic as a New Blood?
- The person attends Hogwarts under the Sponsorship of one of the Most Ancient Houses.
- The Sponsor is responsible for helping the person to learn the culture and courtesies of Avalon. How to exchange favors, titles, gentlemanly behavior, honor duels, etc.
- The person will have to enter into unbreakable covenants with Mother Magic, including one in which the person vows to never abandon the Magical World for the Muggle one.
- Mother Magic weighs the person’s heart and intent. If found pure, the person will be acknowledged as a New Blood. This acknowledgement comes in the form of a signet ring for wizards, a hairbrush for witches, and a cuff bracelet for wix.
Who are established New Bloods in Pureblood Culture “canon”?
- Miss Lily Evans
- Mister Justin Finch-Fletchley
- Miss Hermione Granger
- Mister Severus Snape
How does a Squib’s descendant (Muggle-born) get Sponsored?
The Most Ancient families Sponsor on a rotating basis, one House after the next. Once a Squib’s descendant is identified, the next House on the list is notified.
The Lady of the House (if there is one, the Lord-Consort or Lord, etc. if not) then sends a letter scheduling a time for an in-person visit to explain the situation to the Squib’s descendant.
What sort of relationship is there between a Sponsor and New Blood?
It would entirely depend on the people involved. It could be something like an assigned tutor with a pupil or they could grow as close as family.
When an Ancient House is Sponsoring New Bloods, can branches of a House also Sponsor them?
Branch lines can absolutely Sponsor a New Blood. It doesn’t have to be the main bloodline Sponsoring. In some cases, the main line might have other obligations and duties that make it more feasible for a branch line to Sponsor when it’s their House’s turn.
Would a Sponsored New Blood be granted a small inheritance from a Sponsor?
A Sponsored New Blood might be gifted with a small inheritance, yes. Likely a cottage in a magical village on the duchy.
Would Mother Magic ever give a New Blood an estate?
In special circumstances, titles and estates have been awarded by Mother Magic for great acts of service to Avalon.
My head-canon is that for helping Harry fulfill the prophecy and helping keep him safe, and helping to destroy the Horcruxes (during canon-ish timeline ‘verses), Mother Magic granted Hermione Granger a barony.
Which Ancient House Sponsors Hermione in Pureblood Culture “canon”?
The Decisive and Most Ancient House of Bulstrode.
What happens to a New Blood's Muggle identification (school records, birth certificates) when they move to Avalon?
The wards of Avalon themselves act something like a Confundus Charm and Obliviation Charm combined.
An average Muggle who doesn’t share a blood tie with the New Blood would forget them. If they find or see something that reminds them, a Confundus Charm distracts them until they forget again.
What is the purpose of the signet rings/cuff bracelets that New Blood wizards and wix receive?
To store their excess magic in so that they can build a reservoir of magic to call upon in the future if they’re in danger, need a power boost, etc.
What is Hair Lore?
Hair Lore is the magical traditions and customs built around a pureblood witch’s hair.
- Only a witch’s immediate blood family and spouse may see her hair down. Exceptions exist for dormmates at Hogwarts and anyone she requests assistance from to style her hair (close friends, ladies-in-waiting, etc.).
- The reason the hairbrush is a gift upon becoming a New Blood witch is because witches can store magic in their hair to build up a reservoir of magic. (Pureblood families Craft the brushes with Blood Magic as a fifth birthday gift for pureblood witches.)
- Before her fifth birthday, an ivory wide-tooth comb is used. It’s traditional for a witch’s godmother to gift one for her birth. (The vast majority of the ivory combs gifted at birth are crafted from the shed antlers of the Swanstags that the Carrows breed and preserve. They resemble deer, except they have white feathers instead of a hide. Their antlers are pure ivory and shed once a year.)
- Traditionally, other than the witch herself, her father/male guardian, spouse, and eldest son are allowed to brush her hair to help tend/grow her magic.
- Anyone who has the Right to brush her hair to tend it may call on the magic in her hair at any time and use it (in a duel, to escape wards, fight poison, etc.). The witch’s hair glows when the magic is called upon.
- Cutting a witch’s hair is a criminal offense that results in an Azkaban sentence, whether the cutting was intentional or accidental. The Severing of the hair kills the magic stored in it.
- If done with the witch’s full consent, her hair may be trimmed/cut without losing the magic stored in it by someone with the Right to tend her hair.
- In public, a witch’s hair is always “up”. It’s often “up” even at home in case unexpected visitors arrive before calling hours, though such behavior is quite rude.
- On a witch’s bonding night, she’s meant to present herself to her spouse wearing only her hair, shimmering with her magic.
- The highest sign of favor that a witch is allowed to show any suitor is to gift the suitor a lock of her hair that’s been tied with a ribbon made of her own magic.
What is courting? Why do purebloods court? What are Courtship Dates?
Courting is the process during which purebloods learn more about each other to determine if they would like to bond. Courtship Dates are the scheduled, chaperoned outings during which a courting couple spends time together.
Most pureblood families require someone to be fifteen years of age to enter a courtship. Some families impose higher starting age limits.
A courtship can begin several ways, including a letter of interest, a Bouquet of Intent, a courtship gift, etc. Any gender can initiate a courtship.
A seventh Courtship Date is the official threshold of exclusivity.
How does one go about courting and bonding with twins?
It's similar to courting a single person, except both twins would be courted simultaneously. The twins, themselves, would not bond to each other romantically. They would, however, share a spouse(s).
What are the traditional courtship gifts in Pureblood Culture “canon”?
- The Vigilant and Most Ancient House of Malfoy: a pendant necklace.
- The Honorable and Most Ancient House of Potter: a decorative hair comb.
- A Bouquet of Intent (floriography, the language of flowers is a big deal in Pureblood Culture) with a specific message from any gender to any gender.
- An Artisan-Crafted hand-held fan from a witch to another witch, presented on a satin pillow while kneeling.
- An unblooded ritual athame from a wizard to a wizard, presented on a velvet pillow while kneeling.
- If the fan/athame is presented without the pillow, it’s usually an indication of asexuality and a desire for a platonic bonding.
How are courtships denied?
The politest way is to send/give the person seeking a courtship a pink eglantine, which means I wound to heal so that they know to move on.
What is bonding?
Bonding is the term used to magically commit to a spouse/spouses. It involves the twining of the involved parties’ magic.
Unless someone is a widow/widower, the person must be a virgin to qualify for a magical bonding. (Victims of love potions are still considered virgins, as no consent was given.)
How old do you have to be to bond?
Anyone sixteen years of age and older can legally bond without parental consent, unless a bloodline has a higher age minimum due to family magic or family laws. In some circumstances, with parental consent, a person can bond at age fifteen and a half. Bonding is magically impossible at any age younger than that.
Does a bonding have to take place on a particular day at a specific time?
No. However, most purebloods choose to bond on one of the solstices or equinoxes at dawn as was traditional in Olde Times.
What are the different ways to bond?
- Bonding Hunt – Coordinated by the Ministry of Magic in modern times, and the Oligarchy Houses in ancient times, purebloods can sign up to be “hunted” and agree to bond with whomever captures them.
- Bonding Contracts – In which the involved parties sign a legal document to bond together.
- Bonding in the Ancient Ways under the Olde Magick – Basically, a Sex Magic Ritual Bonding.
- Soulmate Bonding – Two halves of the same soul twine back together.
- Asking someone to bond – More like a traditional proposal type deal.
Can a romantic bond be undone?
Technically, yes. However, a Severance of twined magic inherently damages the person or people it’s employed against at a soul-deep level. That’s why it’s so important for people to be absolutely certain before bonding and twining their magic together.
What is a bonding breakfast?
Most bondings take place early in the morning at dawn, though it’s not a requirement. After the bonding occurs, a lavish breakfast is hosted by the families to celebrate the bonding with guests. An ice sculpture of the family crest of the person who’s bonding into the other family is left in the sunlight to melt, symbolizing leaving the previous bloodline to enter the new house.
What are familial magical bonds?
Magical bonds that exist between members of the same bloodline. The bonds allow people to communicate on a limited basis, share feelings, know if someone is in danger, etc.
If enough magical bonds snap due to deaths, a person can go into Bond Withdrawal, which is an illness that starts as headaches and advances to insanity if more magical bonds aren’t formed. People need magical bonds to be healthy.
What is a Twinned Bond?
A Twinned bond is when Mother Magic twines together the magic of people from two separate bloodlines, making them magical twins.
Are magical twins more powerful?
Generally speaking, yes. Twins share magic; it cycles between them in a never-ending loop. Due to this, each of the twins has access to two people’s worth of magic at all times.
What are godparents in Pureblood Culture?
Godparents are people that are entrusted to help guide and teach the child they’re sworn to protect. Being chosen as a godparent is a great honor, especially as it creates a magical bond between the child and the godparents.
What are godsiblings in Pureblood Culture?
Godsiblings refer to magicals who have a godsibling bond due to one’s parents being the godparents of the other.
For example, because Sirius Black is Harry Potter’s godfather, if Sirius were to have children, they would be Harry’s godbrothers and godsisters.
What are the different types of Magic?
- White Magic — Pure, protective magic that requires a willing sacrifice (such as the ritual Lily Potter performed to save Harry from Voldemort in canon).
- Light Magic — The magic that flows in the veins of purebloods with a Light Magical Creature in their ancestry.
- Neutral Magic — This is a rare, perfectly balanced blend of Light and Dark Magic, most often found in those who are Twinned.
- Dark Magic — The magic that flows in the veins of purebloods with a Dark Magical Creature in their ancestry.
- Black Magic — Horrific, profane magic that requires immense, unwilling sacrifice (Horcruxes, etc.)
Which magical creatures count as Light and Dark in the ancestry of a bloodline?
Magical creatures who possess a humanoid or semi-humanoid form only. No actual animal creatures were ancestors.
- Most Magical Creatures have a Light and Dark version, such as Fae and Veela.
- Vampires are exclusively Dark.
- Merpeople are exclusively Light.
Has anyone used Black Magic in Pureblood Culture “canon”?
- Mordred the Betrayer infamously used Black Magic in his successful plot to murder High King Arthur Pendragon. He died horrifically after accomplishing the deed.
- An unnamed witch used Black Magic centuries ago to place a bloodline curse on the Noble and Most Ancient House of Black. She lost her magic and became the first Squib as a result.
- Anyone who has ever created a Horcrux.
What is the curse on the Black bloodline? What is a Black-blood heart?
The curse the unnamed witch placed on the Black bloodline with Black Magic is two-fold.
Firstly, is the Maleficence Curse. If a person should fall soul-deep in love with a Black, and it’s unrequited, magical thorns will grow in the person’s magical channels. If the person doesn’t have their love ritually removed, they will lose access to their magic entirely and become a Squib. If the Black requites the person’s love, the curse ends.
Secondly, is the Black-blood Heart Curse. If a member of the Black family (or a person who has a parent who’s a bloodline Black) falls in love with someone and that person breaks the Black’s heart, the Black will go insane.
Can wizards or witches do magic that the other can’t?
Yes. Taking into account that its full and official name is Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, I can only assume that “witchcraft” and “wizardry” are distinctly separate things. Due to this distinction, there are some types of magic that are exclusive to either gender. Most famously, Morgana’s Secret Arts.
What are Morgana’s Secret Arts?
They are Magical Secrets that Morgana learned directly from Mother Magic that Morgana taught her own daughters and so on.
(I respectfully request that no one write about/develop Morgana’s Secret Arts.)
Do purebloods ever practice magic in groups?
Witches can practice ritual magic together as a Coven. Wizards can practice ritual magic together as a Conclave. Wixen can practice ritual magic together as a Connex.
Is adoption possible in Pureblood Culture?
Yes, absolutely. Blood adoptions are one of the few legal uses of Blood Magic in Avalon. The child would need to imbibe a Heredity Adoption Potion that contains blood from the prospective parents. The potion will change the child’s features and magic to be indistinguishable from a born member of the bloodline.
A Dark Magic adoption ritual exists in which one person slits another’s throat and bleeds them dry over the family wardstone. The family magic will refill their veins with the new family’s blood and magic. The slit in the throat will heal as a scar. The two people involved end up as blood and magical twins.
What is Fostering?
More common in olden times, and much less frequently used today, Fostering is a way to build alliances or show trust. From the day after a child’s fifth birthday, until the day before their sixth, a child will live with another magical family and learn from them. Wandlore is the lore surrounding the creation and customs of wands.
The Resourceful and Most Ancient House of Ollivander is the exclusive family of Wand-Crafters in Avalon. All wands purchased in Avalon were Crafted by them.
The meaning of the tree from which a wand’s wood is created reveals a lot about the person it chooses. So does the core, since there is lore attached to Magical Creatures and Beings, and it’s the magical core which “chooses” who will wield it.
A wand should never bend to the will of someone who hasn’t won it in a Magical Duel.
Exchanging wands willingly with another pureblood is an archaic, but still legal and recognized, method of betrothal.

What goes into a grimoire?
There are two types of grimoires: family and personal. The family grimoires contain family magic rituals, spells, wards, etc. A personal grimoire would contain spells/rituals/potions recipes/etc. created by that specific individual.
For example, Severus Snape’s would have Sectumsempra, Muffliato, and other spells he invented, as well as custom tweaks to existing potions recipes, new potions recipes, and so forth.
I imagine them as tomes that never run out of pages. So, there could be a section for research, one for spells, one for rituals, etc., all in the same grimoire.

A House can make it known that they’re seeking additional house-elves and those who aren’t bonded can come apply.
