Chapter Text
Kate stands with the rest of the NCIS team on their bullpen, all patiently waiting for the introduction of the new SAC of the FBI Hawaii Field Office. Agent Curtis was offered, and he accepted a position to lead an interagency task force on the island. Agent Curtis had nominated Kate to be promoted to take his position as SAC but the board decided she hadn’t been a field agent long enough though they could all agree she was a valuable addition to the agency, which made her promotion to ASAC a no-brainer.
Kate is filling in the team on what Curtis had told her about the incoming SAC, he was a transfer/promotion from the organized crime/ white collar division. He had spent most of his FBI career undercover and he closed nearly all his cases successfully making enough waves inside the agency to earn him the promotion, or so she was told. In his most recent assignment, he took down the Mancini family, the biggest east coast trafficking crew. That takedown pretty much guaranteed him any job he wanted within the agency.
The team had celebrated Kate and her promotion with dinner and drinks last week, excited for the opportunities this new role would provide for her, but also slightly anxious the new SAC would choose to promote someone else to the role of NCIS liaison if he wanted to. The only thing the team can do now is wait, which none of them are good at.
The ding of the elevator pulled them out of their conversation as they directed their attention at Agent Curtis and who they could only assume was their new FBI counterpart and boss.
Lucy let out an audible gasp followed by an “oh shit”.
But before Jane or Kate could question her, Curtis began the introductions.
“This is the NCIS A-TEAM, Agents Kai Holloman and Jesse Boone” he nodded at both Kai and Jesse. “That’s the resident tech guru, Ernie Malik, next to SAC Jane Tennant.” “You’ll find that your cases align more often than not so you’ll be working a lot with her, next that’s Kate Whistler, you’re new ASAC and finally Agent-”
But before Curtis could introduce Lucy, the man in front of them interrupted Curtis, “I know that one.” “That’s Lucy Tara, my sister.”
All eyes flew to Lucy and followed her as she all but jumped into the waiting arms of the man who is not only the new SAC of the FBI but her brother.
"Hey Lo” was all Lucy could manage to get out through the happy tears which, followed by an equally emotional “Hey Lu”.
After the embrace that went on for what felt like several minutes, Lucy pulled away standing beside her brother and finished the introduction, “Guys this is my big brother Logan - well I guess formally now - Special Agent in Charge Logan Tara.”
Lucy was beaming with pride, but barely keeping a straight face thinking about how insane it is that her brother is here, on island, apparently permanently with a new job.
Seeing the confusion etched on everyone’s faces she continued “Lo this is my team, my family” Then she stepped over to Kate taking her hand. “This is Kate.”
“As in THE Kate, the one you can’t stop talking about?” Logan asked.
Lucy just nodded “yeah she’s the one” meaning that phrase in every way it implied.
Kate blushed at hearing Lucy describe her and knowing that Lucy had told her brother about her, caused butterflies to stir. Had Noah Whistler still been alive, she had no doubt he would’ve been her first call about Lucy as well.
With a grin much too like Lucy’s, Logan approached Kate holding his arms out smirking at Lucy knowing what his next words would start. “How about a hug, soon to be sister-in-law?”
Kate froze as Logan wrapped her in a warm welcoming embrace, while Lucy rolled her eyes and the team laughed at the malfunctioning Kate.
Pulling Kate out of Logan’s embrace, she smacked his chest and called him an asshole as she turned her attention back to Kate trying to reel her in from whatever planet Logan’s words sent her to.
Laughing at his successful attempt to annoy his sister Logan focuses back on the team,” I’ve heard nothing but great things about all of you both professionally and a bit less formally from Lu, and I very much look forward to working with you all.”
He made eye contact with all hoping to convey the truth behind his words. He was excited for a new career path and new coworkers, and he was equally excited to meet the people who Lucy spoke so highly of, who stepped in to become the family he and Lucy never had and filled a role he left vacant by all his undercover cases and his inability to be around and available for Lucy. But as his eyes met Jane’s and she held his gaze a silent but intense moment passing between the two of them, his body nearly had a physical reaction and he had a fleeting thought that maybe the island and its people would end up bringing more to him, like it did for his sister.
Lucy, who had finally calmed Kate down enough to breathe and function, caught the look passing between her boss and brother and quickly stepped in to break it up.
“Ok, No, Romeo, reel it in.”
Logan just laughed it off, as the moment was broken between and the NCIS leader “God, I missed you, Lu.”
“Me too, Lo, it’s been way too long”. Lucy said, smiling back at him.
Agent Curtis, using the break in the conversation to reassert himself. “Well Agent Tara, take the weekend, get acclimated and I’ll see you back in the office Monday morning.”
Logan nodded and replied, “Thank you sir, looking forward to it.”
As Curtis departed, Logan was left standing in front of the NCIS team, each in their own way processing the last twenty minutes.
Lucy busted the silence and gained Logan’s attention with a heavy-handed smack on the arm “why didn’t you tell me?” “Where have you been?” “Where are you staying?” and several other questions fly at Logan so fast he can comprehend all of them.
“Woah woah little Lu, take a breath” as he takes one for Lucy to replicate. “I’ll answer all your questions, but can we do it over wings and beers, I’m starving?”
Lucy looks toward Kate, a silent conversation passing between their eyes, and turning back to Logan she agrees. “Fine, but you’re paying, and I want the full story not the cliff notes.”
“Deal, just feed me please.” He looks towards Kate and the rest of the team. “Anyone else care to join us”
Before anyone can answer Jane jumps in and answers for them. “Not tonight.” “The three of you should spend some time together and catch up”
Looking directly at Logan Jane adds.
“Raincheck”, more of a suggestion than a question.
“I look forward to it” he replies more of a promise than a statement.
Looking away from the deep brown eyes he already found himself mesmerized by, he turned towards Lucy and Kate, “I need to make a call really quick, what do you say I meet you in the lobby in let’s say fifteen minutes?”
“Sounds good” the couple said in unison as Logan turned away heading to the elevator.
“So that’s your brother” Jesse asked once Logan was out of ear shot. Lucy nodded. “Yeah, he’s the oldest.” “Nearly ten years older than me and pretty much the only biological family I have contact with” she answered absent-mindedly while packing her bag to leave. Kate began gathering her things as well as the boys went to their desk to back up for the night.
Jane meanwhile had remained mostly quiet through the introductions and interactions, choosing mainly to observe. Jane had to admit to herself she liked what she observed so far. Logan appeared to be the opposite of his sister but also the exact same. Logan stood a bit over 6 foot, a heavy muscular build especially in the arms and shoulders, his hair was a darker blonde as opposed to Lucy’s dark brown but they both shared the same olive complexion, the same confident swagger Lucy carried herself, making Jane wonder if Lucy learned from him. The smirk that Lucy wore when she knew she was right that drove Jane crazy suddenly didn’t seem such a bad trait on Logan, and God, those eyes. Those eyes on Lucy seemed so average, but on Logan they were spectacular, captivating and they had captured Jane which hadn’t happened in well, years.
As everyone headed in their own directions, to do their own things, Jane packed her bag, certain that with the kids at their dad’s tonight, the only thing Jane would be thinking about would be the eldest Tara, and his eyes and the way her body reacted just being around him. Yes, Jane Tennant was intrigued by Logan Tara, she just was not sure yet if that was a good thing or a bad thing.
