Chapter Text

Captain:

He stood in the doorway, waiting for Alison to wake up and give him the signal to run. Eventually, she did, and he ran out. As he jogged out to the paths around the grounds, he started thinking about his time at Button House. The time that he spent here when he was alive, and the eternity he must spend here since his passing. The colleagues he shared the space with back then, and his friends he acquired after his demise. God, it all seemed like a blur now.

He took the scenic route, one he seldomly used (although he knew it well after his 80 years of death), but soon saw an unfamiliar object, sticking out of the hard, baked summer earth. It looked like the corner of a metal box, probably iron, slightly rusted. He knew he must find Alison, she’d dig it out and open it for him. He was already intrigued by this curious discovery of his. Maybe it was from his time?

He sprinted, as fast as humanly, well, ghostly, possible, back to the house. When he reached the familiar front door he barked out, ALISON. ALISON. WHERE ARE YOU? When she appeared out of a doorway, he immediately told her that there was something of interest down on the (almost) unused path at the back of the property.

‘Please could you send Micheal or yourself on a reconnaissance mission to recover this curious artefact.’ He requested.

‘Ok, I’ll do it later Captain, I'll only be an hour or so - I just need to go to the shops to pick up some bacon. Mike keeps eating it all. I’ve told him to stop making those fridge baps, it'll lead him to an early grave, I swear to you.’ Alison kept muttering to herself as she walked away. The Captain was dejected, but he couldn't do anything but wait.

Later, Alison returned, and set about making lunch for herself and Michael, Thomas ever present, fawning over her as if she reciprocated his feelings, as if she weren’t married. He really needed to cut that woman a break.

‘Stand aside, Thorne. Now, Alison, when were you planning on unearthing my discovery?’

‘Sorry Cap, it’ll have to wait till after lunch.’

He harrumphed, put into a sour mood by her constant (and entirely unnecessary)  procrastination. Still, he supposed a few minutes wouldn't make much of a difference in the face of the eternity he had to spend.

Eventually, she trudged over to him and he marched her down to the place he’d discovered the chest When they got there, she’d dug a hole around the protruding corner, and lifted it out. When she shook the dirt off it, they saw that the Captain was correct - it was indeed a box. They walked back to the house, they discussed the contents of the box. If shaken, they could hear a muted rustling of papers - letters or blueprints perhaps?

‘Alison. Halt please. Perhaps I could just stick my head-’ He hesitated. ‘Ah, no, no. too dark. foolish idea. Carry on.’

At long last they reached the house, the Captain positively bursting from anticipation. They (Alison) opened it, and they were met with an astonishing sight...
