Chapter Text
I don't think that I’ll ever be able to forget the day I met Alistair Wonderland.
The booming sound of thunder clapped and echoed throughout the rooms of my home. Waking up to the rain was, and still is, one of my favorite feelings in the world. All I wanted to do was snuggle up into my quilt and rest while glancing at the glittering forest outside my room.
But no, I couldn’t. Not when I had destiny training! I rolled away from the window and laid facing the rest of my home. I had just started to contemplate sleeping for 5 more minutes when I took a glance at one of the many, many clocks inside my room. The time read 9:23.
My eyes shot up. This was bad, like REALLY bad. Training started at 9:37 (Wonderland timing, right?) Which means I have 14 minutes to get ready, eat breakfast, and RUN all the way to THE rabbit hole! Maybe I could skip breakfast? Or eat on the go? I thought as I flew to my closet. Luckily, I already picked out my outfit the night before. I threw the clothes onto me as I raced to my bathroom.
Once I (finally) left my home, I ran as fast as I could. Through a forest, down the dirt road, by some flowers, and along the river. I came to a stop when I caught sight of the rabbit hole. There were 3 doors attached to a large oak tree: one big, one small, and one in the middle, all leading to different paths. I looked down at my watch, sure that I made it on time. However, even with all of my effort, I made it to the rabbit hole at 9:40. Close enough, right?
My job that day was to change out the “eat me” cake and the “drink me tea.” You may not know this, but there actually is some preparation for Alice’s arrival. You have to switch out the cake and tea so it doesn't go bad and stuff. I pulled out the cake from my bag, and to my disappointment, I forgot to write the “me” in “eat me!” Like, how do you even do that!?! This was so typical of me! Being late and disorganized is practically my destiny…it should be fine though, I thought, all I had to do was complete my task, I didn’t have to do it perfectly. And besides, the next Alice wasn’t supposed to come for another 4 years.
After reassuring myself, I carefully placed the cake and the tea onto the table. I made sure everything looked perfect before I tilted my head and stared up into the hole, trying to see past the darkness. I did this every time I had that task. I knew that I would never be able to see past a few mirrors, tables, and paintings, but I always wished that maybe, one day, I would be able to see up into the real world. Even if I can’t, looking at the few pieces of furniture was still fun. I mean, how did they get them to stay in the air? Although I had lived in Wonderland my entire life, there are just some things that I will never understand.
I was about to leave when I heard it. The faint sound of something hitting some sort of furniture. I darted to a small door, just small enough for a bunny, about to leave. My hand was on the door handle when something in me decided to stay. Is it a crime to be curious? I thought. It wasn’t like I had any other plans for the rest of the day. So, I ran behind a peculiarly large desk. Could this be an unfortunate animal who just happened to fall down the hole? This particular hole was miles and miles long! Falling for that long in the dark could drive anyone mad! If it were an animal, I could actually help it, y’know? I could bring it to my dad, and he could take a trip up to the real world and bring it back. Maybe he could even take me with him to help me train for when I lead Alice to the hole!
The loud sound of a thump brought me back to reality. The sound was loud, too loud. There was no way that this was just a black cat who got a little too curious. I tried to fight off the urge of poking my head out of the desk, but curiosity got the better of me. I decided to take a sneak peek, and that's when I saw him? I guess I was right, because what I was looking at was definitely, DEFINITELY not what I was expecting. Instead, I saw a young boy around my age. He was wearing a blue jacket 2 sizes too big, matched with a sandy shirt, and he had light blonde hair. Honestly, he reminded me of the description that my Dad gave me of Alice. I sat back down behind the desk while I contemplated. There was no way that this could be Alice, right?. If this actually was Alice’s child, he would be way, WAY too early!!! Also, could guys even be ALICE in Wonderland? I thought. But that excuse was quickly shut down by the fact that I’m a girl and my DAD is the White Rabbit.
I had to get another look. I just had to!!! I must’ve been seeing things. I slowly peeked my head back into the room and took in the sight that was in front of me. The strange boy was now standing up, looking at the cake on the table. He seemed to be doing all of the things that Alice would. I flushed in embarrassment as I remembered that I didn’t even spell the words on the cake right! If this were Alice, his whole experience must be ruined! I’m so stupid! How can I mess up my one job? That’s when a feeling of annoyance fell over me. Thinking about my “job” made me think about one of the major parts of my destiny. I mean, I was supposed to lead Alice down here! He was supposed to fall here with MY help! But he just had to fall by himself. No help needed. Which means that I will NEVER be able to go up into the normal world. I had been dreaming of what it looks like up there for practically my entire life. Forgetting where I was and who was with me, I groaned in exasperation.
And that was when I first made eye contact with Alistair Wonderland. His eyes were blue, just like his mom's. I quickly turned away and felt my face turn red. I hurriedly turned into a bunny and booked it out of the rabbit hole. I heard the vague sound of him saying “Wait!” as I left.
I needed to find my dad, asap. I had no idea what I was supposed to do. I mean, he was here 4 YEARS early! Plus, even if he was on time, he was definitely not supposed to see me there. Now I was really stressed. It was a Tuesday, so my dad must be at the Queen’s court. Luckily, that was a 6-minute walk away, 3 minutes if you run.
I ran through the work entrance that was for my dad. Since it only fits something as small as a rabbit, there weren’t many security precautions protecting it. I busted through the grand doors of the Queen’s palace and yelled at the top of my lungs, “ALICE’S SON IS HERE!”
—-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When the Evil Queen came to Wonderland, there were a lucky few who managed to escape before all of the entrances got sealed. Lizzie Hearts got priority because, I mean, she’s the queen's daughter. Kitty Cheshire got to leave as well because she can literally teleport! Bringing her with them was no big deal. And last, Maddie Hatter. She got to leave because it was her dad’s escape team. Of course, he would bring his daughter! So, with all of them gone, Alistair and I were the only ones left.
Alistair was staying at the Queen’s palace before the curse. However, once the Queen turned mad, there was just no way he could stay there any longer. Without turning mad himself. So, with the rest of us gone, there was only one person he could stay with: me. Plus, we had an extra room.
I would be lying if I said that I was excited about that arrangement. After all, since he decided to come to Wonderland on his own schedule, causing me to NEVER see the world outside of Wonderland! I felt trapped, and the fogginess that came from the Evil Queen's curse did not help at all.
Little did I know that two short years later, we would be able to transfer to Ever After High.
