Work Text:
Kairi smiled brightly as she chatted with the fifth person trying to hook up with her tonight. As the night wore on, it was getting harder to suppress the urge to dump her cheap glass of champagne in these men’s faces. But unfortunately for her, playing hard to get was her role for the night.
Kairi needed to make sure she gave all these sleezy rich men a few minutes of false hope that their cheesy pick-up lines were working on her. She even made the effort to keep her full attention on the conversation (as gross as they were they were still rich, she couldn't pass up a chance to find away to get a hold of their money). She was proud of herself tonight though, she didn’t bother looking around the room to find any familiar faces like usual.
She trusted the other people on her team to do their job correctly and they did the same. It just took a while for her to get there, and not immediately write down a plan for every situation. (It was impossible to, especially working with this many eccentric personalities).
She just needed to work on being the distraction so they can pull off their job as smoothly as possible. Extraction jobs aren’t her favorite, too many factors to consider and when the victim is a civilian with no combat training, it makes it ten times harder to pull off. If the job goes sideways, you get stuck with defending someone while fighting off attackers. If it comes down to it, most of the time you have to choose your life or the victims. Or worst, risk getting left behind to give the person a chance to get away.
Let’s just say, Kairi knows from experience how much it sucks to be the reason why someone gets left behind. Her current team is her second attempt at working with a unit rather than solo. But, if this job goes well, maybe she’ll be able to fix her mistake from years ago. The only reason she took on this client really was because his fiancée’s stepmother had connections to a lot of blackmarket players.
It was a win-win really. She got the info she needed and got to save someone while snatching a few wallets on the way out.
She’s pulled away from her thoughts at the crack of her comm line, and tries not to tense up at the sound of grunts and gasps of fear. It takes a few seconds for the person to talk but when they do, Kairi knows it going to be one of those nights.
“So, I have some bad news and good news,” Aqua said causally, letting Kairi finally know who activated their comm. “I found Cinderella and we’re on our way out the back. But, it seems like her stepmother hired some extra guards and they’re blocking my exit. I can take them out but, I’m pretty sure the whole party will know we’re here. Most of the people attending are in her pocket, so getting out quietly is our best bet.”
A second voice sounds from the line, “If you can hold them off for a few more seconds we can get out of here. I’m almost done downloading her files and I can already tell we’ll have enough evidence to prove she’s the one stealing the funds. It will be enough to free Cinderella from the contract and she can reunited with her little prince charming without her family going after her,” Namine rushed out, and the frantic clicks of computer keys let’s Kairi know the hacker is doing her best to get out before trouble can start.
“Don’t worry guys, I’m on my way to Aqua now. We can take them all out no problem, I have my taser,” Olette chimed in, giggling a little too menacingly for Kairi liking. She has to stop herself from groaning out loud. At least it wasn't her bat.
Kairi knows as soon as Olette finished her sentence, they’re doomed from the job going quietly. Aqua and Olette tended to punch first and ask questions later, the two of them wouldn’t care about keeping up appearances if punching was an option.
Kairi looked across the room to where Xion was making her rounds, if she didn’t know the girl personally, she would have totally believed she was just another waitress at the party. She didn’t react to the conversation over the comm line but, she must have had a feeling that things would go south sooner than later. She made her way towards Kairi and “accidently” spilled her drink tray on Kairi.
“Oh my, I’m so sorry Miss!” Xion exclaimed, bowing her head like she was ashamed (more like to hide her smirk at seeing the look of shock on Kairi’s face). Kairi didn’t have to try hard to be annoyed, this was one of her favorite outfits and now it was stained. Ugh, the things she does to pull of a con.
“It’s fine, if you could help me find something to wipe this off that would be great though,” Kairi replied through gridded teeth, knowing she had to play the part of polite heiress. She really wished her cover tonight was spoiled brat instead. Then she could let Xion know her feelings at the moment. But no, she had to save that for later (she was going to make her do her laundry for a week as payback).
Xion continued the act of flustered waitress and led Kairi to the kitchen, thankfully able to block the men who approached her earlier. Even though she didn’t agree with her methods, she was glad Xion got them out quickly. A few minutes later alarm bells started ringing in the building and she knew their time was up.
To her relief, Aqua and Olette seemed to have made out with Cinderella okay (which involved Aqua holding her in a bridal carry while she and Olette fought their way out). She made a mental note to ask Olette the full story later. Aqua sounded a bit flustered when Olette mentioned it on the comm.
Namine was already safely in her van and on the road, urging them to hurry up. Xion grabbed a hat and coat she had hid in the kitchen, the pieces of clothing quickly transforming her from waitress to personal driver. No one batting an eye when she grabbed some keys and led Kairi to the parking garage.
With Aqua and Olette escorting Cinderella home safe, Kairi could finally relax (and freely count the money she grabbed tonight). Xion rolled her eyes when she glanced at her in the rear view mirror. Kairi just stuck out her tongue at her. They all had their own coping methods, stealing money just happened to be her's.
Hopefully, with the information Namine grabbed, they would finally have a lead on the Organization’s operations. She couldn’t take many more disappointments, but she vowed to bring her boys back home.
“Sora. Riku. I will find you again, just wait for me a little longer. Me and my team, we can bring them down this time, I know it.”
