Work Text:
Scar was exhausted. It had been a long day for him, grading students' papers and essays. All he wanted to do was curl up under his blankets and sleep. But alas, he didn’t come home until 8pm, having had to go to his parents house for dinner almost immediately after work and then to the grocery store because the fridge was so empty he had been surviving off of leftover take out for 3 days.
He arrived at home in a blur, barely remembering how he even got in through the door. Scar took off his shoes and jacket, placing them neatly by the door in their spots like Grian, his roommate and coworker, had told him to do so.
He wasted no time, almost running to dump the bags of groceries on the floor in the kitchen and take a nice shower and change into his pajamas, barely sparing a glance at his roommate, Grian, who was all cuddled up on the living room couch with a book in one hand and a cup of tea in the other.
Once Scar was comfortably wearing his old white t-shirt he has had for far too long and gray shorts, he jumped into the empty spot beside Grian.
“Rough day?” Grian asked, looking up from his book, and placing the cup of tea on the table beside the couch.
Scar nodded and curled up underneath the blanket Grian was using. “Mhm, had dinner with my family.”
Grian let out a breath of amusement, a small smile on his lips as he watched Scar steal most of the blankets on his lap.
“You wanna talk about it?” Grian asked again, gentler this time, trying to get a little bit more out of his roommate.
Scar stayed silent for a moment, thinking. “Not really.” He mumbled, his eye lids hanging low and heavy over his eyes as he fought to resist sleep just a little longer, resting his head on Grian’s shoulder.
Grian didn’t say anything else, not wanting to press Scar further. They settled into a comfortable silence, Grian reading his book while Scar had his eyes closed, presumably sleeping.
“Hey G?”
“Yes, Scar?”
“Can you read to me?”
Grian’s eye brows lifted up a little bit, his eyes darting over to where Scar was looking up at him through his eye lashes.
Grian nodded. “Yeah, of course.”
Scar smiled to himself, letting out an air of contentedness as he listened to Grian narrate the book. Scar wasn’t even sure what exactly it was, Grian’s words going in one ear and out the other, but it didn’t matter to him. He really just wanted to listen to Grian’s soothing voice as he drifted to sleep, any and all worries he had had about the day suddenly disappeared as if they never existed to begin with. It was one of the things Scar loved about his roommate, that no matter what he was going through, spending time with Grian always made him forget anything negative he might have been feeling beforehand.
Scar forced his eyes open, fighting the weariness he was feeling, wanting to stay and listen to Grian for longer. He watched Grian, gazing at his long eye lashes and dark brown eyes, the curve of his nose and the way his lips moved as he spoke. Scar didn’t have any words to describe him besides beautiful. Absolutely and utterly beautiful. If Scar were to go blind, he wouldn’t care as long as the last thing he got to see was Grian.
Grian, sensing that he was being watched by a sleepy Scar, wrapped an arm around his shoulder and started toying with his hair. He ran his fingers through the hair at the nape of his neck, scratching lightly as he went along.
Grian continued this until he felt Scar’s breathing slow down and even out, glancing over to see Scar fully asleep against him. He stopped reading and shut the book, setting it aside on the table and making sure he didn’t disturb Scar too much as he moved. Grian relaxed back into Scar, letting his own head drop on to Scar’s.
Grian smiled to himself, a warm, fluttering sensation in his chest and stomach as he and Scar fell asleep, cuddled together.
