Summary
“Javert,” murmured Valjean. He tightened his hold on the strawberry plant that he had been dealing with. Anything harder and the stem would snap under his touch. Javert placed his palm on his shoulder—the touch surprisingly light given their shared history—and breathed.
His voice was low when he spoke.
“I went to Rue Plumet. You weren’t there.”

Running away is never a solution to one’s problems. But it does delay the point as to when they have to be figured out. -

Summary
He closed his eyes against the nauseating vertigo, only to snap them open when a calloused hand framed his forehead. It felt ice cold.
“Oh dear God above,” Madeleine muttered under his breath. “Why didn’t you tell me it was this bad?”When Javert faints in front of Monseur le Maire while asking to be dismissed for denouncing him, Madeleine takes Javert into his house and his care without realizing how serious the man's condition really is. As Javert sinks ever deeper into delirium, both of them are forced to be honest about the long-buried feelings that now resurface from the depths of Toulon. Valjean must piece by piece let go of his comfortable life as Madeleine in a desperate attempt to save his guard... and the man in Arras, who faces the death penalty in Valjean's name.
How much is Valjean willing to sacrifice to save innocent lives? Can Javert stay alive long enough to save Valjean in return? In the end, do any of them even have a future?

Summary
Valjean does not ask, for he knows what Javert’s answer will be. Neither does he inform Javert of his intent, for it requires no leap of imagination to imagine the man’s reaction: his wild words, perhaps an attempt to throw something. And so it is that, when Valjean steps into the room with a heavy basin of steaming water held in his hands—he had asked his housekeeper to heat it, and yet knowing the nature of Javert’s complaints, had insisted on bearing it up himself—Javert raises his head from the sweat-stained pillows which have become his prison these past weeks, curls his lip in distaste, and says, “You presume too much.”
