Penelope often said, with a fond sigh, that Thomas was “just like his father”—Colin had never quite figured out if that was a compliment or a thinly veiled warning. Still, it was true enough. Thomas had Colin’s trademark chestnut hair, his eyes (which were slightly too knowing for someone so young), and that smile. It was the sort of smile that could charm a snake into giving up its venom.
But the boy’s unbridled love for food and his total adoration of his mother made him Colin’s perfect miniature.
