Summary
The arena is beautiful like this, cleared of fanfare and chaos. There’s a special kind of stillness that comes after a big game: a private warmth despite the cool of the ice.
To his surprise, Shane’s already on the ice. Ilya blinks, once, then twice, mouth parting. Shane’s wearing clean, black skates— figure skates, doing laps around the rink. His skating has shifted out into something more unhurried, elegant. He’s not a professional by any means— the nature of his strides are still darting. Operating, by habit, towards an invisible puck.
“Holy shit,” says Ilya.
or: hollander, for all his quirks, is… hollander. rozanov, if were possible, falls a little bit more in love
(now with chapter 2: shane is once again filling in for his friend at an exhibition gala and is doing a poor job of secretly practicing for it. ilya finds out and attends the performance)

Summary
Many people have started turning their heads at the commotion. Ilya’s half sure it’s just another drunken brawl, a frequent byproduct of stupidity and poorly held liquor— but Svetlana, who is sitting angled towards whatever is happening, squints her eyes. Surprise splashes across her face. “Podozhdite. Isn’t that Hollander?”
Later, when he finds Shane outside on the curb, Ilya says, “What the fuck.”
“I’m half Japanese,” Shane replies like it explains everything and like he didn’t just deck a man flatly out. “My mom put me in Karate when I was little. What that guy said wasn’t right, and he initiated it, so.”
or: hollander gets into a bar fight. rozanov tends to his wounds afterwards

Summary
To Ilya’s surprise, Shane climbs up onto the quartet’s mini stage and sits down on the chair behind the cello. The other musicians disperse too, taking their rightful places in the semi circle. Shane adjusts his arms and picks up the bow, letting it rest on the body of the instrument. The cello is a little too big for him, but it’s not too difficult to accommodate: he nods, satisfied.
They begin. Music fills the area, gentle in its melody. Shane looks a little apprehensive at first, if not nervous, as his arm trails back and forth with the bow, but by a couple lines into the piece, he eases, shoulders unwinding, body swaying loosely. He settles into the music, focus sharpening— it’s clear he has years of experience behind him.
“Oh my god,” Ilya says.
or: at a gala they’re at, the cello player of the quartet playing live music never shows up. shane fills in for him
(now with ch 2: ilya asks shane to play something for him. naturally, shane picks ‘can’t help falling in love’)
