Summary
The small faceless man on the instruction sheet is very confident. He holds his tiny illustrated tools with the certainty of a person who has never had a bad day. He indicates, through a series of numbered panels, that this is simple. That a reasonable person can do this. That it is, in fact, a matter of following directions.
Ilya follows directions excellently. He is a professional athlete who has spent his entire career executing instructions given under pressure. He is not intimidated by a bookshelf.
He is willing to admit now, after nearly two hours, that he is slightly intimidated by this bookshelf.

“Where is the fun in private?” Ilya’s eyes darken. “You like the edge, you always have. You like when I push until you snap.”
Shane’s grip on Ilya’s wrist tightens. His other hand comes up, fists in the front of Ilya’s shirt. “I hate you sometimes.”
“You love me,” Ilya says. His hands come up slowly, sliding under Shane’s open jacket to grip his ribs through the thin dress shirt, fingers digging in until he feels Shane’s pulse hammering against his palms. “Say it.”
“Fuck you.”
“Mm, later.”
