In the grand scheme of things, becoming a mentor seems easier than going through the arena. Death is no longer a misstep away, loved ones can remain loved ones, and Johanna Mason thinks that she might even have a shot at keeping someone alive.

But the Game is the Game, and the truth is that it never really ends.

(Johanna Mason, from her victory tour all the way through to the end of the 72nd Annual Hunger Games. Part 2/4.)

    Summary

“I was always the one to beat,” I tell him. “I’m sorry that you forgot.”

Eighteen-year-old Johanna Mason has what it takes to survive the Hunger Games, but she’s not going to let anyone know it. Least of all the audience, who she eyes with thinly veiled hatred. But to make it out of the arena in once piece, she’s going to have to put on the show of a lifetime.

    Summary

Haymitch, from the execution of his mother, brother, and girlfriend through the 51st Games.

I have an apostrophe problem. According to the metal gates that guard my house, I live in Victors’ Village. It is supposed to belong to more than one victor. I grab a wrench and climb up the gates. They are decorated with metal vines that act as footholds. I cannot get an angle to knock down the apostrophe exclusively, so I end up bending the S as I lever the punctuation out of place. That does not matter. I wedge the wrought-iron apostrophe where it belongs, right after the R.

    I live in Victor’s Village.

    Alone.

Note: This fic was written before SOTR, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that carries on two rather specific major thematic elements of SOTR (details in endnote). It does not contain SOTR spoilers.
