God Valley Divergence, MANGA SPOILERS.
Shamrock's role within the Freedom Fighters was acting as something of a secretary for his dad, taking notes, keeping track of their schedule, that sort of thing. But because they went up against the government, his dad was always scared that someone would discover the link between them and target Shamrock to try and make his dad give up on his goals. Already, the local armies of the countries they led protests in sometimes shot at them.
Or: What if Dragon managed to save Shamrock at God Valley?

"Exile still seems the best option, Stoick..."
Stoick should have known better. While he didn't know much about his son-especially now-he knew the boy was clever. It should have been no surprise when a guard burst into the Council Meeting and revealed that Hiccup had escaped the cell Stoick put him in...hours after the boy was revealed to have saddled a dragon.
Hiccup is gone, and so is the beast.
They search, but do not find him. Berk falls asleep one night and awakens in the Great Hall, where the torches come to life and cast an image of their isle on the wall, from which floats Hiccup's voice, years younger.
AKA, Hiccup forfeited the final challenge, leaving Astrid with the right to kill the Nightmare. Story picks up in the Race to the Edge era, except Berk never learned the truth of dragons, no one knows how Hiccup really lost his leg, and stories of a hooded 'vigilante' riding a Night Fury have been long whispered...and Berk will see it all unfold.

Uses “watching the show” as a framing device for a went-worse-than-canon au, divergence during the final test at dragon training so Astrid wins the right to kill the Monstrous Nightmare. Absolutely brilliant, incredible suspense, great use of and disregard of canon in order to create a crazy fun au that remains incredibly in-character. 10/10 fic

Ever since Mildew convinced his dad to send the dragons away from Berk, Hiccup has had a bag packed. There’s a blanket in there, oil, an extra spring for his leg. Fresh strips of soft leather and rivets, in case the straps that go around his thigh pull away from the wooden socket again. Medicines for pain and infection. Bandages for the blisters he gets on his limb. Sewing needles and gut in case Toothless’s tail tears, sturdy cord to replace worn cables. Waterskins, dried fruit and fish. A hammer and chisel and knife, but too many of Gobber’s tools would be noticed.
Everything they might need if they had to leave in a hurry.

AU where Hiccup and Toothless leave in "When Lightning Strikes," but a lot of things are going to need to change on Berk before it's safe to come home again.
