For about three weeks now, he had been unable to enter the same room as Qifrey without feeling like his blood had caught fire and was burning him alive. Anytime Olruggio so much as glanced at the other man, he would find Qifrey either laid out as if he was waiting to be devoured or poised like he was being painted, and it was taking a serious toll on his poor heart.

Luffy has a strange definition of a "first mate".
Apparently, the rubber man thinks that to choose a first mate is to choose someone as your spouse. The revelation throws Zoro off, but ultimately he goes along with it. After all, he'd already dedicated himself to this new crew and the boy who declared himself pirate king. Might as well go the full mile and become his husband too. So he becomes Zoro, the First Mate and Luffy's husband. It feels so obvious.
Unfortunately, both Captain and First Mate neglect to inform the rest of their merry crew exactly what being "first mate" means. When the couple finally reunites after 2 long years apart, they shock the rest of their crew members with their... enthusiastic greeting.

The Sunny is anchored just off shore, close enough to see the deck but far enough away that the crew has had to take the Mini Merry to make land. Scattered across the beach in various stages of chaos—rolling around, yelling, fighting—are his crew but not his crew, so similar and yet so, so different. They look younger, fresher, and whatthefuck there, on the deck of the Sunny just peering over the railing, he catches a flash of green—his own green hair—
“Ah, fuck,” he grunts, and then immediately turns back around because no, actually, he does not want to deal with this.
