My axe was the first thing that belonged to me.
Everything we have – from the West boundary to the East – belongs to Papa, but this axe is mine.
I've replaced the handle twice in the past three years; the daily usage means that the wood wears away smooth in the shape of my palm until it becomes too brittle to survive the hard thwack of the head against the logs that are my job to chop. Each time I fix it, I carefully copy the letters of my name from the old wood to the new:

Summary
Charlie Spring is a PhD candidate in Data Science at UC-Berkeley where he uses his supercomputing time to analyze large datasets. He sleeps on a mat under his desk in his cubicle because rent prices in The Bay Area are insane, and roommates suck. He spends his free time pestering his librarian friend, Isaac and volunteering a few hours a week at a local pet shelter. As a lonely data nerd, he decides to start dating on the “data-driven” OK-Cupid platform, but as a data scientist, he can’t help but to optimise his approach to ensure he’s conducting a thorough search for the right partner.

There will be two short epilogue chapters added after the story is marked complete.The story was inspired by two fantastic true stories told on the Moth and Story Collider podcasts, respectively. I highly recommend you listen to them, but I'd wait until after you've finished the fic. The story will start T (for language, mainly), raise to M (starting at chapter 8) and will eventually earn the E rating for smut.
