    Summary

Kenan was dying. Should have died. If not from the elements and hypothermia- then from being without a pack for as long as he has. He accepted his fate when he laid on the decaying forest floor and felt far too warm for the winter's day it was. But then they found them, and now Kenan has to prove that he's worth saving, not only to the pack- but to himself.

There's gonna be hurt, there's gonna be comfort, and a whole lot of pack feels. Poor Kenan deserves all the love coming his way- but he has to suffer first...

    Excerpt:
“Shit,” the shadow gasped. “Oliver, get Malachi on the phone and tell him to prepare for a critical Omega,” it ordered.

Omega, the figure mentally screamed. This was bad bad bad bad. Omega was an old term- an ancient one. No self-respecting modern pack would use the term and follow the strict hierarchy it emerged from. No modern pack, but modern packs weren’t the only packs out there.

They let out a terrified whine once they realized exactly whose territory they staggered their way into. The shadow cursed again and bent over the shaking form. “Shh, little omega,” they cooed. “We’re not going to hurt you.”

    Summary

“I’m going to check your scent real quick, okay?” The man was already peeling back one of the patches.

Mathias scrunched his nose as his own sour scent leaked out. He wore scent blockers all the time per regulation, only taking them off to put on a fresh set. His own scent was foreign and revolting to him. He couldn't imagine how it smelled to complete strangers.

The man’s mouth flattened into a thin line, and he looked back up at the woman as he smoothed the blocker back into place. “Omega.”

    “Jesus,” the woman breathed.

The man stroked Mathias’s neck a few more times. There was something sad in his expression.

“I’m not an omega,” Mathias said hoarsely, finally able to pull away. “They don’t exist. That’s just an excuse for you to oppress half your population.”

    Summary

“The alpha set the mug down in front of Max, and took his own bowl when Isaac offered it. Max stared at the steaming mug a moment too long—it was blue with white speckles, a chip in the handle—before he forced his eyes back down to his folded hands. As tests went, this one was obvious.“

A continuation of “Seeking Shelter” by sphagnum, opening from Max’s first morning with the pack, because be the sequel you want to see in the world.

    Summary

The leader stepped forward, and the betas flanking him moved further out to the side to keep a clear line of fire on Max without impeding the alpha’s progress. The alpha’s nostrils flared and his advancing steps stuttered, pausing and then resuming twice as fast. Max felt a sick little swoop in his belly, grim satisfaction that his plan was working mixed with an awareness of what that would mean for him later. Guns down, gentlemen. Oscar protocol.

The betas lowered their rifles instantly, pointing them at the ground in front of Max instead of his chest. Max took a deeper breath in, his tension easing a bit as he moved past the part of the plan where he might just get shot dead before he had a chance to try to bargain. It had always been a risk; it had just seemed like a better death than slow starvation.

The alpha stepped closer, looking him over. He was a big man, but also quiet, light on his feet. Max tipped his chin up. It was a gesture of submission, and it showed that his neck was bare. No bonding bites, no competing claims. The added vulnerability made him tremble a little harder, but it was worth it for the way the alpha zeroed in on his throat.

    Summary

Even without context, as always Dick is enthralling in his storytelling. “What’s happening?” Tim asks, fascinated to know what’s got Dick so animated this time.

    It’s the smallest of expressions.

Dick blinks at him, like for a moment, he forgot Tim was there.

Then he’s twisting in his chair to face him, eyes bright with the promise of a new audience. “Okay, so - remember how I told you about my new manager at the studio? Well get this - he made this new rule that audience members aren’t allowed to wear hats when they come to see the kids’ recitals. It’s part of the ‘audience dress code’, a thing which one hundred percent he just made up himself - ”

Tim watches Dick attentively. He laughs at all the right points. He even lets out a small gasp when he knows it’s expected.

And it’s good. It’s a good story, and Dick is so happy to tell it.

    ***

The frustrating thing when he gets like this is that it’s never triggered by anything real.
