Hua Cheng took a step towards the bed and leaned closer, his inky eyes studying him closely. After a moment he sighed and flopped on the bed next to him, a hand lazily reaching up to Xie Lian's head and scratching it gently.
"Who am I kidding, we both know I'm going to keep you. I don't even get why...there's just something about you that won't let me throw you out the door."
Unable to say anything Xie Lian tilted his head slightly and watched as the corner of the ghost's thin lips arched a little. It was such an endearing look.

Xie Lian is turned into a ferret by a curse and gets adopted by an unaware Hua Cheng. The ghost turns out to be very doting, exceptionally charming and severely starved for talking about a mysterious lost beloved of his.

Summary
When Hua Cheng drinks the True Shape Serum, it has an unintended effect. In a rare moment of bad luck, his spiritual power reacts to it strangely, causing him to revert into his earliest ghostly form and lose his memories.
Much to Nan Feng and Fu Yao’s horror, the Scrap Immortal recognizes him.In his eight hundred years haunting the three realms, Hua Cheng has shrugged off and crushed far stronger enchantments and curses.
By all rights, the True Shape Serum shouldn’t work on him. It's a paltry trick, no more than an annoyance considering the vastness of his spiritual power and the breadth of his experience with spellwork. So it's hard to say why Hua Cheng’s spiritual energy reacts to it the way it does.
Possibly, the enchantment recognizes that there's nothing he wants less in the world than to lie to His Highness now that he’s finally found him again, and seizes on this weakness.
Perhaps it was foolish from the start, to think that he could deceive his God when his very being sang to tell him everything he knew.Series
