"What are you doing?" Regulus asks gently, his voice quiet as he shakes his head the slightest bit. Attempting to will himself to stop.
"Say you do not care for me," James tells him, his voice low as he whispers into Regulus' ear. "Tell me you feel nothing, and I will walk away."
"I feel..." Regulus starts, feeling James' hand snake to hold his waist as he feels himself being pulled towards James' lips. "I feel..."
The sound of a door opening quickly fills the room.

Summary
Regulus Black had been having a good year. He'd managed to get out of going home for the holidays, prepping for OWLs was going well, he hadn't fought with Sirius (he hadn't seen Sirius), and he, Evan, and Barty had successfully undergone the animagus transformation. Sure, he still had to successfully carry out the whole running away thing, but that was future Regulus's problem.
Everything was monotomous and predictable, just how he liked it.
At least it was, until Barty had an idea.
What if they got back at the so-called 'marauders' for all the grief they'd given the Slytherins over the years? And with their animagus forms, it's not like they'd be seen or caught...
What could possibly go wrong?

Summary
At the beginning of the Hogwarts 1977-1978 school year, James Potter finds a cat and Regulus Black finds a Horcrux.
These events are not unrelated.
What follows is a deal to their mutual benefit: James helps Regulus hone the finer details of advanced transfiguration, and in return, Regulus teaches James what he knows of occlumency and legilimency. James is pleasantly surprised by how much he enjoys their lessons, certainly more than he thought he would considering what (admittedly little) he knows of Sirius’s younger brother. Regulus, for his part, thought he was smart enough to know that anyone with as many secrets as him has no business teaching fucking mind reading to another person. Especially when that person is James Potter.
There is affection—the kind that only comes from meeting someone you never expected to understand you. And there is war—a looming thunderhead that neither of them wants to see consume the other.
The rest is a matter of secrets, family, and letting go.
