Derek torna a Beacon Hills solo per scoprire che mentre era assente il branco si è quasi dissolto e i suoi amici hanno rischiato la vita a causa di Theo, dei Dottori e della Bestia. Tormentato dall'idea di cosa sarebbe potuto succedere avverte una fitta di dolore fortissimo e perde i sensi. Stiles, che lo soccorre e ascolta le spiegazioni troppo vaghe di Deaton riguardo al suo malore, intuisce che c'è sotto qualcosa di grave e si mette in testa di fare il possibile, e forse anche l'impossibile, pur di curarlo.

Il ritorno da New York porta Derek Hale in una Beacon Hills troppo diversa ma sempre uguale. Derek, che cerca disperatamente un coinquilino, non sa che il palazzo di sua proprietà in pochissimo tempo sarà letteralmente invaso da quel passato dal quale tentava di scappare. Al principio, però, nemmeno la presenza costante di una ragazza chiacchierona (con il bonus di un tenerissimo chihuahua) riuscirà a smuovere il giovane Hale.
E poi c’è Stiles, che ormai ha smesso di essere tutto arti troppo lunghi e parlantina (caratteristica che ha ceduto a Kira) per diventare il tipico ragazzo attraente; un ragazzo attraente che Derek non può ignorare.Storia di AireHaleinski

È quasi ridicolo che gli ci vogliano svariati minuti a ricordare perché il suo corpo non gli sembra più suo. Una volta riconnessi i pezzi, Derek pagherebbe per avere ancora qualche momento di beata ignoranza.
Kate gli ha fatto qualcosa, quando era prigioniero in quella cripta. Qualcosa di oscuro e terribile, che pian piano si è fatto strada dentro di lui fino a portargli via i suoi poteri.(oppure)

They lapse back into a comfortable silence. Shane looks at Ilya as he is and thinks about Ilya as he was at seventeen, smoking in the back of a Saskatchewan parking lot. The image is almost unbearably tender for Shane, where his own seventeen year old thrill at seeing Ilya Rozanov meets all the things Shane knows about that lonely boy now.
Shane thinks: Do you love number 81 more than you love this man?
"Hey," Ilya says, brushing his knuckles over Shane's cheek. "Whatever I do, I will be there when you come home."
Ilya decides to retire. Shane is very normal about it.
