“Did you come for any important reason?” Washington asked, trying to convey urgency into his tone and hoping that it would give away his meaning well enough. It didn’t seem to work, as Lafayette only looked confused, tilting his head to the side slightly like an uncertain puppy. He opened his mouth and then closed it again, before taking a deep breath through his nose as though he were steeling his nerves for a task that scared him greatly. Perhaps he was. Then-
“Je suis vraiment désolé de vous déranger si vous êtes occupé, monsieur le Général ! Mais je voulais parler un peu, et avec cette tempête il n’y a rien à faire… alors, si cela ne vous importune pas, je souhaiterais passer un moment en votre compagnie? Je partirai bien sûr si je vous gêne!”Lafayette just wants to spend some time with Washington, except neither of them understand each other. (There are translations for the French in the author's notes at the end, don't worry. Although if you read it without the translations first, maybe you'll get poor Washington's confusion, so that could work too.)
