Clio de Riva’s magic is practical, utilitarian, and always in concert with destructive objectives, for the Crows, and now for the Veilguard. Emmrich’s magic is... well, magical. When he lights up his tower with starlight one night, Clio is curious how it’s done. Emmrich indulges her.
“How did you make those?” Clio’s voice parted the drowsy silence of the early morning and hung in the air like a fog.
Emmrich, without opening his eyes or halting the soft hand running up and down her bare back, hummed inquisitively. “Make what, my dear?”
“The twinkling lights, the little stars,” she said, pointing up at the cavernous ceiling filled with small but numerous specks of green light, shading the room in an uncannily soothing twilit cast. They had escaped her notice earlier, but now... she had been staring at them for at least half an hour, resisting the hypnotic lullaby of Emmrich’s measured breaths. She didn’t know why, but their gentle constancy entranced her. “I’ve never seen anyone use magic like that.”
