“Penelope!” he calls, shucking his overcoat at the door. He considers for a moment keeping it on, knowing how Penelope likes the figure he cuts in the flowing brown coat, but he cannot abide having any more fabric than strictly necessary between them when he finds her. “Pen!”
“Sir!” comes Rae’s voice as she appears from the doorway across from the stairs. “Sir, thank goodness. We were worried when you did not return home as scheduled.”
“Apologies, Rae,” he says to her, smiling as politely as he can manage. “The roads were washed out. Where is Mrs. Bridgerton?”
“She is in her room, sir,” she starts.
“Excellent,” he interrupts again. “Please see that no one disturbs Mrs. Bridgerton or myself.”
“Sir, wait—”
“Thank you, Rae.” He is already halfway up the stairs, unable to really think or hear properly in his lustful madness. If he had, he would have heard the worry and urgency in his wife’s faithful lady’s maid’s voice. As it is, he keeps going up the stairs, two at a time.
“Sir!” Rae practically shouts from the bottom of the stairs. “Sir. Wait.”///
Penelope is hurt in an accident. Colin takes care of her.
