“Thank you for today,” Rebecca whispers. Emotion catches in her throat. “Truly. I didn’t once feel like an outsider or a spectacle. I’ve been to countless parties where I’ve felt exactly like that. On display. Never really seen. Never really a part of the festivities. God, I remember this one time Rupert actually introduced me to his friends as his trophy.” The memory sours her stomach. At the time, she’d mistaken Rupert’s timbre and tone for pride, but she now sees it for what it is: insecurity, possessiveness, and arrogance.
