    Ever since Alina was found by the testers at eight years old she's been told her life has one purpose: To tear down The Fold and reunite Ravka.

    Despite this Alina hasn't set foot outside the palace walls since the day she was brought to the Darkling to raise. To make matters worse she has barely seen the Darkling for more than ten minutes at a time since then, only ever really seeing him to show the progress of her training.

    So what happens when he suddenly returns in the middle of the night, five years after she last saw him, promising he's there to stay?

    “Hello, there,” she says softly, taking a seat in the chair next to the boy's.

    “‘lo, ma'am,” he responds quietly, lifting his gaze to meet hers. Alina has to stifle a sharp intake of breath as she stares into startlingly familiar light brown eyes. Despite his age—he has to be barely ten, maybe eleven—she knows those eyes, and she knows the boy’s name even before she asks, just like she knows exactly what kind of Corporalki he will choose to be.

    “What's your name, young man?”

    “Ivan, ma'am.”

    “It's nice to meet you, Ivan. My name is Alina,” she offers him a smile, and she can't help the surprise she feels when he gives her a tiny smile in return.

    The second War for the Dawn is lost before it has even begun. With a little help from the Old Gods, Bran sends the last surviving Starks somewhere they can make a difference: back in time. Alone in an unfamiliar place, scattered and separated from each other, they must save the dragons and their house from death and madness. The survival of all humanity depends upon it.

    Alternatively: Jon discovers just how messy that side of the family can get, Arya is forced to concede that some problems can't be solved by sticking them with the pointy end, and Sansa finally gets to play the game of thrones. This time around, it is a woman they will call Kingmaker.
