Clarisse had imagined this moment a hundred different ways.
Sometimes it ended with her driving her spear straight through his chest before he could even say her name. Sometimes she punched him hard enough to knock that stupid smirk off his face and walked away before he could explain himself. Once or twice, she imagined just standing there, letting him talk.
She had planned it like a battle.
The moment Chris Rodriguez got his mind back from the labyrinth’s curse, she would be ready.
She had gone over it step by step with Silena and Annabeth. It had started a few days after she returned from Arizona with Chris barely conscious and muttering nonsense, his mind twisted from the Labyrinth’s magic.
By the end of the night, the group had formed something resembling a plan.
What she’d say. What Chris deserved to hear. What she’d do if he tried to joke about it. It had all seemed perfectly clear at the time.
But now? Now she couldn’t remember a single word.
Because the moment had finally arrived and nothing about it felt like the battle she had prepared for.

Summary
The Big House living room had been rearranged. Three chairs faced the couch. Percy immediately didn’t like it.
Chiron turned toward Percy, Annabeth, and Clarisse with the same patient expression he used when explaining complicated battle strategies to new campers.
“You three have recently returned from a very…eventful quest,” he began. “As part of Will’s training in the medical arts, he will occasionally assist in conversations regarding both physical and emotional recovery after such experiences.”
Percy felt his stomach drop. Oh no.“Tonight,” Chiron continued calmly, “he will simply help guide a discussion between the three of you regarding… whatever may currently be troubling you.”
Will shifted awkwardly in the middle of the room.
“So,” he said carefully, pushing his hair out of his eyes. “Chiron thinks something is… wrong with you guys.”
The silence that followed was so thick Percy could practically hear it.

Clarisse sighed, clearly resigning herself. “…you said mortals have a thing.”
Percy blinked. “A thing?”
“The promise thing.”
“…you mean a pinky promise.”
She looked like she physically hated the words leaving her mouth. “Yes.”
“You want a pinky promise.”
“I don’t want one,” she said immediately. “I need one.”
She held out her hand, pinky extended, not meeting his eyes. He stared at it for a moment.
“You really remembered that conversation.”
“I hate that I did,” she muttered. “Of all the useful tactical discussions we’ve had, my brain kept that.”
He gently hooked his pinky around hers. “I promise I won’t tell anyone about your asthma.”
“And you won’t treat me different,” she added quickly.
“I won’t.”
“In training. Or a fight.”
“I won’t.”

Summary
“I’ve decided to make this simple.” The crowd leaned in.
“A fight, to the death.” Luke said. The wind gusted across the deck, snapping the torches sideways. “The winner, walks off this ship alive… and takes Annabeth with them.”
Percy remembered a different moment, quieter, far away from this ship, the words he had thrown at Annabeth without thinking, fierce and certain: that he would burn Olympus down if it meant saving her.
He had meant it.
But standing here now, with the salt wind in his lungs and Clarisse beside him, another question rose up like a weight he couldn’t push away: would he kill someone to prove it?
“So,” Luke spread his hands. “choose.”
And Percy understood the real cruelty of it: Luke wasn’t asking whether they would die. He was asking who would have to live with blood on their hands.

Percy, Annabeth and Clarisse get captured on the Princess Andromeda trying to get the fleece. Luke decides his crew needs live entertainment: a duel to the death.

Summary
Annabeth wasn’t the nervous type.
She’d faced dracaenae twice her size without flinching. She’d walked straight toward a charging hellhound with nothing but a knife and a plan forming in her head. Strategy steadied her. Danger made sense.
A boy, apparently, did not.
Valentine’s Day was three days away. Camp Half-Blood had leaned fully into it this year. There were paper hearts strung between the dining pavilion beams, pink and gold ribbons tied around the torch posts, and some Apollo campers had been playing slow songs at dinner instead of their usual obnoxiously loud music. There was a couples archery competition, a stargazing night at the canoe lake, and a pasta making class. There was also a dance.
And Percy had said absolutely nothing. Not a joke. Not a sarcastic comment. Not even a confused why is everyone acting weird?
Which was worse.
He’d been at camp for nearly a week now, technically he was supposed to be in school, but he’d gotten suspended for two weeks.
So he was here. Available. Present.
And still oblivious.
