After Windrixville, Ponyboy Curtis tells himself he’s fine.
He goes to school. He runs track. He keeps his head down and his mouth shut and pretends the darkness sitting in his chest isn’t getting heavier by the day. He doesn’t talk about the nightmares, or the smoke that still burns his lungs, or the way grief sneaks up on him when he least expects it.
He definitely doesn’t talk about getting sick.
But four days of cold rain, too much running, and one very human breaking point force Ponyboy to confront something he’s been avoiding since the fire: he doesn’t have to handle everything alone and maybe he never did.

Ponyboy swallowed down the last pill, his throat burning as tears welled up in his eyes. That was it. That was the last pill out of all thirty pills that had remained in his medication. The last pill out of all of the ones he had just swallowed. His throat hurt like the devil, and the pounding headache resonating in his head sure didn't help matters, but to Ponyboy, it didn't matter anymore. Nothing else did.
And soon enough, nothing would ever matter to him again. Not when he was dead.
