Everyone in a certain part of the city knows that if you want something - an object, a person, a legal document, a mystery solved or an obstacle removed - you go to him. He’s smart and fast and not afraid to get his hands dirty, and today he doesn’t have his hulking ogre of a boxer bodyguard with him. Probably he wants to go unnoticed… and he walked right into the tea shop, where the Lan guy is sitting.

“Are you well, Shufu?” Lan Xichen asks, all gentle concern.
“Mn. I have had a meeting with the rest of the elders.” Best to get it over with, he thinks.
“Yes, I was informed they called a council. What guidance will they offer?”
Lan Qiren allows himself one more indulgent moment of distraction with a sip of his tea, whose quality demands a moment of appreciation. After that, though, there’s no other way to avoid what must be done.
“They — we — must ask our Sect Leader to thoughtfully consider the issue of a marriage from which a Sect heir may be produced.”
Lan Xichen goes very, very still, and Lan Qiren’s heart aches for him.
“…Marriage.”
“You are of marriageable age, Xichen,” Lan Qiren reminds his nephew. “It is not an unreasonable concern. You must have an heir.”

Nie Mingjue picks up the most sturdy of the bolster pillows strewn all over the bed and begins forming a rectangular base with practiced ease, ignoring Jin Guangyao’s wordless hissing like a pissed off street cat to better focus on building something with enough structural integrity to survive at least a few minutes of the sort of vigorous activity he’s going to subject it to.

Jiang Cheng sighs. There’s a deep ache in his chest, hooked up under his ribs and squeezing around his heart, that he knows without examining too hard is the familiar feeling of being alone; ridiculous to feel it when surrounded by people, he knows, but… this was supposed to be a family visit, it was supposed to be a week with his sister and brother in their family home, and then Yanli had wanted the kids to be there, which was fair, and wanted Zixuan to be there too which was… fine, and then Wei Wuxian had whined that if the Peacock got to be there, could his beloved Lan Zhan stick around too? And Jiang Cheng had wanted to tell him exactly where his beloved Lan Zhan could bloody well stick it, but that wasn’t really fair, and Wei Wuxian is such a fucking brat nowadays without Lan Wangji glued to his hip that Jiang Cheng had caved. So their family time together that was supposed to be just them and maybe the kids, now included plus-ones, and also, inexplicably, Nie Huaisang.
