When the killing curse backfires, Voldemort’s wraith does not disappear into the sunset (or Albania) but seeks out the sympathetic magic he feels from a Dark Mark nearby. It turns out that one Severus Snape is lurking outside the dwelling of his former best friend, providing Voldemort with the opportunity to possess his follower.
Events unravel, with the Dark Lord still active in the game.

Summary
After the battle at the Ministry, Severus Snape reflects on his life, his friendship with Lily, and on the information he gained during Occlumency lessons with Harry Potter. He comes up with a plan to circumvent Dumbledore's machinations and to keep Lily's legacy (i.e. her son) alive.
But then Severus Snape's life gets turned upside down. There is the (maybe not so) crazy Dark Lord who has his own plans concerning the Potions Master. And who is Lord Black now that Sirius Black is dead?
