Summary
They aren’t his family, not in the traditional sense. But the idea that they might be, that they could be, unsettles him more than he wants to admit. It’s the same quiet dread that hit him when Collins said he had helped raise Amy. He doesn’t know why exactly. Maybe because imagining them as a family implies imagining him and Jack as something. And that’s just absurd, right?
Or: Robby has been a quiet constant in the lives of Abbot and his daughter, filling a space that was never clearly named. As they drift into their fifties, he begins to recognize that his feelings for Jack may have deepened into something real and perhaps impossible. Now he’s left wondering if this almost-family could ever truly be his.

Summary
“I didn’t say I minded, uh, sharing a bed with you.” Robby scratches at his beard and tries not to look at Jack. It’s hard because Jack isn’t even looking at the road; he’s smiling sideways at him.
“Don’t worry. I don’t kick.”
“I think the phrase is ‘I don’t bite’.”
Jack’s grin widens.
“That’s the problem. I do bite.”
Robby fears his recovery is going to feel very long.

Summary
“You’ll never guess who I saw at work today.”
“I’m sure I never will, you should probably tell me.”
“Jack! That nice coworker of yours, the veteran - ”
“Dr. Abbot? Wait, are you allowed to tell me this?” Perlah says, leaning back so she can look up at her husband with surprised eyes.
“I mean, I don’t exactly have any PHI for you, and he literally said, ‘oh hey Kareem, tell Perlah I said hi!’, so I think he was fine with it. His partner did not look as excited, but - ”
Perlah blinks up at Kareem, tilting her head at that word. “Partner?”

Summary
"It's late to start riding," Jack said as Robby straightened, a neutral statement that was a protest nonetheless. They knew how to say things without saying anything, the two of them.
Maybe that was part of the problem.
Robby stared down at the still-sleeping baby. "I have a lot of things to see," he said, almost to himself, a double layer to that, one that Jack found oddly heartening.
"And people to love," he said, taking a flier on it because why the fuck not.
