Summary
He never expected that the first words out of Chris’ mouth upon seeing each other for the first time in months is, “What is on your face?”
It catches him off guard. It's not angry. It's sassy. It's his son.
“I am trying something?” he replies, “I guess I can put you into the nay votes.”
Chris just shrugs with a small smile before leaning back into their hug.
Something settles back into place in Eddie’s chest as he holds his kid. This kid who had shot up like a weed over the summer, as teenage boys seem to do. A moment passes before his own courage takes root and can ask, “Can we go to our lake, just you and me?”
And before the nerves can turn his stomach Chris grabs tighter and nods fiercely into his shoulder. He buries his nose in his son’s wild curls, breathing deep and kissing his head.

“Eddito, what’s wrong?” Pepa asks as soon as she opens the door. He has his hands shoved in his sweatpants pockets. His mouth twists and he shakes his head and leans down to hug her. She kisses his cheeks like always.
“How’s Christopher?” he asks instead.
“Perfect Angelito, as always,”
“Don’t let him hear you say that,” he smiles sadly.
“I remember another Angel that had that phase.” She pats his cheek as he sits at the kitchen table and hands him his mug of coffee with a teaspoon of sugar and a dash of cinnamon.
“He’s still sleeping,” she slips into her own chair, “I met this very nice girl at the hair salon this week. She’s new in town, looking for people her own age…maybe someone to date…?”

Evan Buckley is absolutely soaked. Standing in the rain and miserable If he’s being truly honest with himself. But that’s the thing. He should be miserable. Because he just had his heart broken. He was supposed to have had the cinematic love story— from the meet cute while he had been helping Bobby host the annual toy drive to a kiss in the rain after they decided to exchange keys and each have a drawer at the other’s place, cheesy keys in a jewelry boxes, contact paper and all. But the box is in his jacket pocket and it’s pouring rain. and Alex was the one with the car that night so Buck trudges towards home. Trying not to think about how this news will spread throughout town, for lack of a better term, like wildfire.

A second, then a blur. Ilya knocking over one of the kitchen island stools to engulf Shane. His shaking frame holding Shane so tight, Shane felt himself shaking back. He could only hold on back, just as tightly.
“Please.” Came the strangled voice by his left ear. “Please, tell me.”
And who was Shane to ever deny a wish of Ilya Rozanov.
“I’m signing to Ottawa. Tomorrow. If you would want to come with.”
And then Ilya was shoving him back, holding him close to his face. “Of course. I drive. Of course I come.”

Summary
Chapter 24 of The Long Game, with a twist.
Ilya’s phone breaks during the plane’s emergency landing. He’s fine, but he has no way of letting the Hollanders know right away without outing his relationship with Shane. Considering their recent fight, he figures it is best to wait until he can contact Shane discreetly, which takes a few hours.
Shane finds out about the accident, and can’t get a hold of Ilya. His first thought is that he may have lost him forever and will never recover from it.

Jessie Pike knew all about Shane Hollander. Star hockey player. His brother’s best friend. They had met in passing a few times, but he really never had a chance to get to know him until recently.
Normally, he would never be interested in a hockey player. He knew too much about them, knew the stereotypes, knew the reputations. But Shane was different.
He was sweet, thoughtful, sincere, interesting to talk do. And absolutely fucking gorgeous. So yeah, Jessie may have had a little crush on his brother’s best friend.
Unfortunately, Jessie discovered a little problem surrounding the object of his affection. Well, a few problems. First, Hayden had absolutely no idea that his best friend might not be interested in women. Second, Hayden also had no idea that his best friend might be romantically involved with a certain hockey player who he absolutely despised.
Or… Hayden’s brother has a crush on Shane, but after a failed attempt at asking him on a date, realizes that Shane may truly just need a good friend to talk to and help navigate his complicated situation.

Summary
From across the rink, Shane watches Ilya get punched in the face.
He keeps a distance from the mess playing out. He knows better than to go over and make it worse. He would be more worried about it if Ilya wasn’t laughing with blood running down his face as one of his teammates drags him away. He’s yelling at the player that punched him, and Shane is grateful he can’t hear what he’s saying because he knows it’s obscene.
“Your boy is feral tonight,” Pike says to Shane.
Shane groans. “He's not my boy.”When Shane is in junior high, Ilya's family moves to Canada. Instead of meeting as adults, they grow up together. Shane learns Russian and Ilya spends a majority of his time at the Hollander household. When they start their professional hockey careers, they have to learn how to be opponents instead of teammates, but also how to be apart for the first time in their lives. When Ilya suggests that they sleep together, Shane has to balance their friendship and their casual relationship.

“Hey, Hollander, it’s your turn to tell the story,” Wyatt Hayes interrupts from the row behind them.
“The what?” Shane questions, looking to Ilya, who only manages to give him a sort of sympathetic look. “Is this some kind of hazing thing you didn’t tell me about?”
Troy Barrett’s head pops up from the row in front of him. “It’s something we do every flight. Harris told the story about his sister and a skunk on that first flight after the incident in Tampa, and it kinda became a thing. Helps to calm everyone’s nerves.”
“Oh,” Shane says, feeling nervous and kind of annoyed already. “Just like…any story?”
“Usually it’s something funny. Pretty simple stuff,” Nick Chouinard tells him. “But you’ve got to stand in the aisle and project so we can all hear you.”
“Oh, but I don’t have that loud of a voice,” he tries to say, but it doesn’t seem like anyone is listening, an excited rumble moving through the team.
Fucking great.
“So, the first time Ilya met my parents was so bad.”
“How bad was it?” Hayes deadpans, and everyone laughs again.
Shane swallows. "I'm so glad you asked."
