    Alina thought she’d be ready to hear those words. She knew that the moment she stepped foot on the skiff, she might as well have been signing a death contract.

    She always thought the words would slip from her lips and not his. Strong, stubborn, stupid Mal was rasping out those words as he closed his eyes.

    It wasn’t supposed to be like this. This skiff was supposed to glide through the fold perfectly; the Volcra were supposed to be completely ignorant of their existence. But now she clutched onto Mal, feeling his life force slowly drain from him.

    Or: What if Mal died during the first crossing? What if Alina claimed an amplifier without knowing?
