Summary
Over on the stage was Regulus. Seated, without any audio equipment or stage lighting, only his guitar resting on his knee and a notebook open on the empty stool next to him. Without looking up, Regulus began to play.

Regulus was looking at his notebook still, as if he didn't know all the words by heart yet. James realized this was likely a new song. A love song. A breath was stuck in James' throat, and his feet were rooted to their spot.
“It's knowing that this can't go on forever, It's likely one of us will have to spend some days alone, Maybe we'll get forty years together, But, one day, I'll be gonе, One day, you'll be gone”

Summary
At the beginning of the Hogwarts 1977-1978 school year, James Potter finds a cat and Regulus Black finds a Horcrux.
These events are not unrelated.
What follows is a deal to their mutual benefit: James helps Regulus hone the finer details of advanced transfiguration, and in return, Regulus teaches James what he knows of occlumency and legilimency. James is pleasantly surprised by how much he enjoys their lessons, certainly more than he thought he would considering what (admittedly little) he knows of Sirius’s younger brother. Regulus, for his part, thought he was smart enough to know that anyone with as many secrets as him has no business teaching fucking mind reading to another person. Especially when that person is James Potter.
There is affection—the kind that only comes from meeting someone you never expected to understand you. And there is war—a looming thunderhead that neither of them wants to see consume the other.
The rest is a matter of secrets, family, and letting go.

Regulus turned his arm around a few times, as if the Mark would suddenly appear. He even checked his other forearm, questioning his sanity the entire time.
There was nothing.
He didn’t understand. He could clearly remember getting the Mark. It had been so painful he’d thought he was going to die, but he could remember it.
The Mark didn’t take and he was going to have to try again. And again… and again.

Summary
Regulus bursts into laughter. The sound is lovely. So, so lovely. It sends a pang through James’s chest, and it takes him a few moments to recognize it.
I’m jealous, James realizes, I’m fucking jealous.
This is no longer simple attraction. It’s not about how mesmerizing Regulus is on stage or how objectively stunning he looks in tight clothes. That can be chalked up to neglected physical needs, but this… James wants to be the one to make Regulus laugh like that. He wants to share those intimate, conspiratory glances with him.
James Potter has a crush on Regulus Black.
A crush like he’s a bloody teenager.
Or
James Potter has never seen Regulus Black as anything other than his best friend’s little brother. When Regulus returns to England after five years abroad, that changes.

And it was naive of him, really, to believe Regulus couldn’t possibly be that brazen. Because, of course he fucking could. This is Regulus Arcturus Black he’s talking about.
So, yes, James should have seen what happened that night coming from miles and miles away. But it’s not like he’s complaining about the outcome, even if it was categorically a really stupid idea.OR.
Remus and James find out they’ve both been fucking Reg and obviously the only rational conclusion is to fuck it out three-way style?
