description from my original tumblr post: there's been some great concepts for wacky exotic matter shenanigans including time travel wackiness but ive got a really fun one:nancy shoots the exotic matter and dusteve from 25 years into the future show up. crucially, dusteve are in an established longterm committed relationship and EVERYONE is super normal and not at all weird about it.

A shockwave sent Dustin sprawling to the ground, knocking his head hard and making it spin. When his vision clarified, he saw someone else also struggling to his knees. He was short, about Dustin's height, with close cropped curly brown hair, shot through here and there with grey. He looked oddly familiar but Dustin couldn't place where he knew him."Son of a bitch!" The man exclaimed, shaking his head. He looked up, staring Dustin right in the face with the exact same blue-grey eyes Dustin saw in the mirror every morning.

Dustin didn't need Steve to worry about him, couldn't cope with the idea of someone else doing something stupid and drastic and life-ending to protect him.
He wouldn’t allow it.
Even after he has the shit kicked out of him. Even as Steve promises Dustin won't lose him. Because Dustin knows it’s a promise he might not be able to keep, though he knows he'll keep the one of his own. Words spoken so long ago yet truer now than ever.
