Why is it there? Who knows! Certainly not the Hogwarts student body. In fact, most of them are pretty sure not even it knows why it's there.
One thing is quite clear, though: it seems rather desperate to finish the map it's making.(AKA The Knight shows up in Hogwarts with no grand quest beyond finishing its map.)
