Shane clung to him, shaking. Ilya’s lips pressed on his temple, his cheek, anywhere he could reach.
'Listen to me', he said quietly,'They don’t know you. Not the first thing'. His thumb brushed under Shane’s eye, catching tears before they could fall.
'You’re strong. You’re-' he huffed a soft breath, almost frustrated by the lack of adequate words, '-you’re everything. The best thing in my life. The best player in the league.'
A pause. 'They didn’t deserve you in Montreal. Not for a second.'
Shane mumbled something into his shirt, voice muffled and small.
'I can’t hear you, baby.'
Slowly, Shane lifted his head.
His eyes were glassy, wide, lashes clumped with tears, face flushed and open in a way that made Ilya’s chest ache.
'What if they’re right?' he whispered.
The words hit like a punch.

Summary
Team management e-mails him early in the afternoon, but it’s just after helping Jackie feed Ruby and Jade dinner, when Hayden has the chance to go to the bedroom and sit against the bed headboard, that he manages to see and read it. The language is polite but friendly, and the person writing it actually identifies herself as the lady from the team’s media relationship, Nathaly, which immediately makes the exchange feel more real. She calls Hayden by his first name too, which also helps. Hayden has read some official communication before, but they addressed the team as a whole, so he knows this is different. Nathaly is talking to him to know if there’s any way he might billet for next season.

Alternate universe where Hayden was drafted two seasons before Shane and is three years older than him. He's not quite a veteran, but, somehow, he still gets picked by the Metros to house hockey's second coming of christ, Shane Hollander, during his rookie season. Shane never really leaves.
