    Edward didn’t say anything. His eyes stung and his throat burned, but he didn’t move.

    When Roy held out his hand, Ed hesitated for a long time.

    This could be some horrible ploy—some last-ditch effort from his stupid social worker to get him into a house that could deal with him. Roy was a police officer. He was a war veteran. He knew how to get people to do what he wanted.

    On the other hand, Edward knew Roy. He knew how he liked his coffee and that sometimes he liked to procrastinate on his reports and that he liked to shoot goo-goo eyes at Riza. He knew what Ed’s favorite books were, and he knew about Al. He knew, intimately, what Ed went through.

    Ed reached out to grab Roy’s hand.

    or, a deeply traumatized child with one (1) leg and a legendary temper bulldozes his way through the foster system, refuses to stop haunting the hospital where his brother sleeps, and accidentally collects a tired cop, his coworkers, and something that looks suspiciously like a family along the way.

    The war in Ishval is beginning to wind down. The State Alchemists sent in by Fuhrer King Bradley have done their job well. The Flame Alchemist has amassed a reputation of the bringer of death and destruction- surpassing even Solf Kimblee in pure destructive capabilities. In a few more months, the war will be declared won, and the soldiers sent home.
    Alone on the outskirts of a deserted battlefield, Roy Mustang is caught in an explosion that would have been lethal if not for two things: the Flame Alchemist's quick reflexes, and a couple of doctors named Rockbell.
    Hiding from the military, he returns with them to Resembool, where he meets two young boys and their mother; good friends of the Rockbells and new family for the disgraced alchemist. But the military isn't done with him yet, and the homunculi still need their sacrifices.

    Or... Roy gets injured and ends up in the Elric household while Ed and Al are still young. The combination is rather explosive.

    Roy visibly shook off the mournful haze he had fallen into and deliberately directed a smug look at Ed. “What do you think, Shrimpy?”

    Ed frowned. “Wait, how did you get it to ignore the bowl? Everything always shatters when you leave it in a circle and it isn’t part of the transmutation.”

    The smug grin grew even bigger. “Well, I might tell you.” Ed’s eyes narrowed. “If you admit that my transmutation was better than yours.”

    Urey sighed. There were two children at this table and neither Winry nor Al were one of them.

    “Never!”
