It should have ended there. A small mistake, a simple typo in the outdated script of the Avenger, sorry, the Defender of Tomorrow against the Machine Herald – the name itself marked him out as a villain, no need to add to it. No one knew and no one needed to know. They themselves had no desire to dwell on it. So don't change the music, repeat the same almost pointless clashes, the same fights, the insults and the rest.
Try, at least. Because if the first confrontation had been a little weird, the others just seemed to be like before. Yeah, they still threw the same sarcastic remarks at each other and they fought. But up close. Closer and closer, until they came to blows. No weapons, no lasers, no gadgets that explode or create force fields: just their bare hands and bared teeth.
.......After one night, one mistake in their old laboratory, Jayce realises that Viktor and he cannot be just enemies. But he finds a very toxic way to deal with his loss, sinking deeper and deeper until he begins to understand Viktor's way of thinking a little.

The other’s a cropped shot from last summer — sitting on the fire escape with a cigarette, his leg brace tucked out of frame.
Bio says trans, disabled, grad student. Like he's listing ingredients on a package label. Tends to draw a certain crowd, and this guy’s already reading like one of them.

“Viktor?” Jayce whispered, blinking quickly, trying to adjust his vison to the darkness as the dust started clearing. “Viktor!”
"…’M here, Jayce.”
Somehow, the slurring of the words was just as terrifying as the situation itself. Viktor never sounded like that, always took pride in himself for choosing his words and how he said them carefully. Only a handful of times letting himself lax and be free with his speech…only when he was with Jayce.
"Where - ” Jayce struggled to say, pushing himself up on his forearms to look ahead and quickly realized he was wrong. No, it wasn’t the most terrifying thing to see the ceiling crumbling around Viktor, it wasn’t hearing his speech be slowed and weary.
It was this.
Or a failed experiment with the Hexcore causes an explosion. Jayce and Viktor are trapped and time is not on their side.

“And you nearly let your brain get in the way,” Jayce strokes his side gently, callouses a little softer in the water and the way Viktor’s breath catches…He grins to himself. He still barely could believe that he could have this. That Viktor was in his arms, in his bath, and letting him take care of him. Jayce knows the gift in that - Viktor, his Viktor was notorious for never letting anyone help (well, aside from medical staff but even then, Jayce had overheard conversations…). But Viktor’s weight is a trusting one against him, no tension…
He rubs his sides and Viktor lets out an indulgent sigh.
