    Summary

“I know how to clean a gun too,” you say mischievously.

Caleb’s voice is low. “Do you now?”

You twirl the gun around your fingers—a trick he’d taught you once upon a time, after way too much pleading, if it’s so dangerous, why do you know how to do it, teach me okay, gege, gege, geeeeeee—then aim it at him with both hands wrapped around it. The first pose he’d taught you, when he’d taken you to the shooting range. Gentle hands around yours as he spoke softly in your ears on the best position to take, how to best read the target with your eyes. Your hands pantomime an exaggerated shooting gesture, gun jerking upward as you pretend to pull the trigger.

“Bam,” you say playfully, before blowing at the end of the gun like those old Western movies you used to watch together.

“Oh, and there she goes, a perfect shot.” Caleb puts a hand to his chest as though in pain, but his mouth is curled upward in an indulgent smile. “Wounded,” he sighs, “right in the heart.”

“Man down, man down,” you say in a sing-song voice as you circle him, and he puts his hands up in surrender.

or: there's more than one way to clean a gun.

    Summary

Where the body is bare and tense, however, the face is the exact opposite. A mask covers it from the forehead down to the very top of ajar lips. He doesn’t know if it’s the lighting or if the lace is too tightly woven, but he can’t make out anything through the mask’s material. Can barely even see the bump of a nose.

What he can see steals his attention, though.

A mouth. Lips bare with not a hint of gloss or lipstick, but blotchy red, as if they’ve been roughed up, bitten hard. The chin is tucked down toward the chest, and despite not being able to see the eyes, Caleb knows where they must be trained: on the hands, on what they clutch, on the way the body is split open around it.

    Wet silicone.

    Drenched bedsheets.

    Familiar drenched bedsheets.

Young men battle many different vices: porn, drinking, smoking and other drugs. Caleb’s vice trumps them all.

    Summary

“Pips,” he says lowly. He switches his phone from one ear to the other—like it’ll make any difference, like he’ll hear the right answer through arc of movement. “You didn’t run off to the courthouse, did you…? Last I checked, you’re not married.”

“Do we need to be? That’s kind of old-fashioned, even for you.”

“Yes, you need to be. He does need to marry you if he wants to ask that of you.” It’s like a dream he’s trying to push up against, all his common sense tossed into the mouth of the garbled sea. Wasn’t it you accusing him of acting strange not so long ago? All because of a chip in his brain?

“I shouldn’t have called you.” You laugh, acerbic. “I don’t know why I thought you’d get it.”

Caleb believes that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
