“I do not think these grapes are very nice, Pen,” he said. “They are tart. Taste one for me, please? I have had too many and I cannot tell anymore.”
He had also stopped by the farmer’s stalls and bought fruit for the house. Elliot had helped him pick up pluots, a pineapple, and a variety of apples called Calville Blanc d’Hiver. They came from France and were ugly brown lumps, but they had a surprising banana flavour. The vendor had told Colin they were often used for tarts.
Elliot had kept the pineapple with him, and he was using it as a mountain down on the parlour rug. Horse was climbing it in a very brave attempt to provide support for puppet Elliot. Apparently her puppet son would not risk his horse’s life on the treacherous pineapple’s sharp peaks. It was very touching, but none of it was convincing her the pineapple would be fit to eat later. Whatever was happening with the weather over in Elliot’s pretended world, the entire pineapple mountain had fallen over and rolled around for a long span of time. It was a mountain of rare dexterity and mobility, and no wonder it was so hard to climb.

What if Penelope became Lady Debling, her husband went on his planned trip, and returned three years later with almost no information about her life in the intervening time?
Greeting a child he had not known existed, or perhaps did not exist as his own child, was not covered by traditional etiquette. It seemed safest just to say hello to Penelope and let her make introductions. She didn’t seem afraid of him.
“Hello Penelope,” he said evenly. “I see some new faces on the estate.”
The boy moved when he looked at him, stepping around Penelope to the man who was standing behind her and slightly to the side. Not coincidentally, the boy’s brown hair was just the shade of Colin Bridgerton, who put a hand down to pat the child and hold his fidgeting fingers.

Geralt’s heart dropped to his stomach. If his expression betrayed him in the slightest, the girls didn’t say anything. Playing dumb was probably his best option here, especially with Jaskier not too far behind. “I’m afraid I don’t know what you mean.”
“He’s deep in conversation with him, he can’t hear you,” reassured Vyrella, as if she’d read his mind. Even so, she brought her tone down to a whisper. “It’s about you, isn’t it? His song?”
“Lots of them are about me.”
