Summary
Rocky had fallen in love with Grace long ago. There were many reasons, even now, not to act on this love. Telling Grace would likely make it uncomfortable and add stress to its already very stressful short life. Their journey to Erid would last under four Earth years, which is practically nothing in the grand scheme of things. Rocky would soon be reunited with all his friends and family, and of course, his lovely bond mate.
All this to say, it would be an unspeakably stupid, selfish, illogical decision to approach Grace romantically. A decision Rocky knows he would regret for the remaining 300 years of his life. He knows he will regret it, and so he makes peace with keeping it to himself. He loves being Grace’s dearest friend. That’s plenty enough to quiet the voices in his head.
One day, while watching Grace sleep, he learns that Grace reciprocates his feelings.

The next thing he’s aware of is Rocky’s voice, carefully intent. This means he’s discovered something new and is absolutely not going to let it go.
“Grace is ♪♫♪♫, question?”
“Huh?”
“Need word,” Rocky trills, “Domestic companion organisms. Lives in habitat of more capable species. Does not build structures. Does not contribute to heavy engineering. These common, on Erid, in units, for morale. They make noise and trip over own appendages. Cute and stupid.”
That is a lot of words, and Grace is pointedly half-asleep. They trickle over him in lazy streams of thought as he sips his coffee, through his early, “it-is-maybe-morning” fog…
—And then he nearly chokes on his coffee, cheeks flushed bright, bright red.
“Are you calling me your pet?”

"But Grace have sex in crew quarters sometimes."
"That's not— you shouldn't—" Grace shakes his head. He knows Rocky doesn't mean to make him uncomfortable. Heck, Grace's biggest problem at the moment is that the knowledge of Rocky watching him doesn't make him uncomfortable. Not in the way it probably should. "It's not really sex. Since I'm by myself when I…" he trails off and hopes that's the end of it.
"Rocky is here when Grace have not-sex."
"No, I mean—" Grace sighs and tries not to pull out his hair. "It's only me. Touching myself. You don't touch me."
Rocky sinks back on his hind legs and goes quiet in a way that Grace recognizes as careful thought. Stony fingers click together and drum against the aluminum composite flooring. When Rocky speaks next Grace nearly falls off his stool.
"Grace let Rocky touch, question?"

“Not a bad idea,” Grace stretches his legs a little. “I’ve shown you lots of music. You remember the soothing ones. Why don’t you sing for me?” He asks, jokingly.
“Good good good!” Rocky chirps excitedly, wiggling around inside his ball. “Yes, Rocky will sing. Grace will listen. Grace will sleep easily.”
