    Summary

Aang grits his teeth at his cowardice and pushes his foot forward, ignoring the frantic drumming of his heart. He tells himself that he has no reason to be nervous, that he’s good at this. At bending. At people. He tells himself that he will have fun here, that he will make himself. That he will ride penguins, and laugh, and study, and be diligent, and accept the albatross around his neck. He tells himself that—

    Nothing.

He steps around Hakoda, putting on his brave face, and looks down at her— Katara— and feels everything solid in him melt.

    "North or South?"

“South,” Sokka answers, tilting his head. “Well, I suppose you could say both, technically. Her father emigrated from the North Pole. You remember the young Northern general from a few years ago, got banished for knocking down the spirit forest?”

As if Zuko could ever forget a banished prince. “Tonraq?

Sokka nods. “He married a Southern water bender named Senna. Their daughter, Korra, is, well, she’s--,”

    “Aang.”

    Summary

The thought occurs to her randomly, while she’s at work. She’s assisting a young woman who had just been in a car accident— a teenager, really— with her pregnancy. Katara has her sitting on an examination table, her round belly exposed, water-covered fingers hovering above her skin. There’s a small mass, a heartbeat and a whorl of chi that she can feel, pressing back against her. Katara describes the entire process, and the girl smiles at her uncertainly throughout, a look of wonderment on her face. “And to think,” she whispers. “In the beginning, I’d been praying to get my period. Now, I feel so relieved.”

The distant part of her that can still feel wants to commiserate. She wants to laugh, pat her shoulder, and say, “A baby can change everything, huh? Isn’t life so ironic?”

And then it hits her, like a bolt of lightning down her spine— I can’t remember the last time I had mine.
