Summary
When Mydei wakes up at entry hour, it’s to thirty texts and ten missed calls, all from Phainon.
“Mydei,” Phainon’s voice says, somehow managing to slur the consonants. “Mydei you… you wouldn’t—woah. Woah. Everything is—is—” A raucous round of laughter drowns out Phainon’s voice. “Mydei,” Phainon says again. “You wouldn’t be… belieeeve—” He stretches the word out like it’s some kind of competition. “Cipher just—Cipher just told me the craziest—it’s so—it’s really, um. It’s crazy. I’m—I’m—” The message stops.
Mydei pulls his teleslate from his ear to stare at it. This isn’t the first time Cipher has dragged Phainon to an ouzeri to get him blackout drunk.
Phainon disappears after a night of drinking with Cipher. Mydei, in search of their usual morning spar, goes looking for him only to find a strange dromas instead.

Summary
Skopas died in his cot a little before dawn, on the morning of the eleventh day after the Council of Elders had voted by a margin of three votes to permit Kremnoans to draw water from the eastern cisterns of Okhema. His death was a quiet one in linen sheets that smelled faintly of herbs, with the morning bells of a foreign land ringing over the makeshift camp.
It was a most inglorious death. His brother, who had sat with him through the long night, did not weep. He set his palm flat upon the corpse’s forehead, traced the sigil of Nikador above his eyes, and rose to leave the tent.
Mydei knelt by the cot, setting the back of his hand to Skopas's cheek. The flesh was already cold. He'd thought about it a dozen times over the past months, known from the first that they would have a death in the camp before long, and he had known that when it came, he would have to do this. He had simply hoped that he would have a little more time to prepare.
Funerary marches are no easy thing, not when your people are much diminished in a foreign land and every action is suspect---especially when a white-haired nuisance with bright eyes and a charming smile insists on tagging along.

Summary
“You’re distracted, Deliverer,” Mydei mutters. Despite saying this, he isn’t pulling any punches today.
The silence between them becomes stiff, and Phainon needs to occupy his hands with something, anything. “I’m in the middle of… researching something,” he says.
Mydei hums. “With the Grove?”
Phainon feels sort-of-bad-sort-of-not for obfuscating the truth: one because it’s Mydei, and the other because the matter is about him confessing to Mydei, you see. He pulls a face. “You could say that.”
Kremnoan Roses aren't real. Probably. Phainon is about ninety-nine percent sure. But after coming across an antique Kremnoan vase, Phainon swears that if he, by some miracle, manages to recreates them, he will confess to Mydei with a bouquet of mythical roses.
