Once the Nether brain is defeated, the world returns to peace and quiet. The cities are rebuilt, the living people are freed from their parasites, and all is well. In part for Oleander, he would agree- up until now, as he begins to question his faith, his lineage, and the 'why' behind all that he does. He fails to protect his own light, and he falls into despair as a broken man. Little does he know, there are two who have been waiting patiently for his mug to pop up again so that they can pick up the pieces.
Or,
After the story, Halsin, Astarion, and Oleander (tav) never discussed their relationship and had to split off from one another for different reasons, meeting up again four years post game by happenstance after Oleander unintentionally broke his oath and is lost in life. Thus, he clings to the only people he's ever loved. (Even if he doesn't know that.)

“Astarion.”
Astarion opened his eyes, breath caught in his throat. His skin crawled, cock softening, as he met Halsin’s gaze in the dark. Adjusting took a moment. The world faded into focus in greys, doing nothing to assuage Astarion's panic.
It was clear that Halsin was concerned. He had that strange look about him. The same one he wore when Astarion dodged important conversations like what do you plan to do about the ritual, or are you all right?
It made him feel so… horribly seen.
Astarion can't push memories of Cazador away. When he wakes, Halsin is there to comfort him.
