If a word could cut Elphaba knows that one would have drawn blood.
Now it’s Glinda who turns away and Elphaba is frozen in place, stricken. Shivering in her soaking wet clothes as she gathers the papers shoved into her hands and begins to skim its contents. The fight drains out of her in an instant, joining the pools of water gathering around her feet.
“What is this?” Elphaba’s voice is quiet now with disbelief, eyes finding Glinda’s figure knelt in front of a solid gold fireplace, striking a match in her hand.
The fire catches on the logs instantly, the orange light dancing across Glinda’s face, casting shadows in her expression, “What does it look like?”
It looks like information. Like names, dates, and locations of Animals suspected as part of the resistance. She’s horror-stricken to find names she recognizes —names that Dillamond had whispered in confidence and secrecy— and the icy clench of fear in her chest chases any last remnants of warmth the storm had left behind.

Glinda feels suddenly very brave and very stupid. “Do you not want to kiss me because you actually don’t want to or because you think you’re being noble?”
Elphaba is quiet for so long that Glinda becomes convinced she didn’t actually ask that question aloud. Instead of answering, the green woman looks out over the ink-dark harbor, the sea beyond it. “We’re leaving again tomorrow.”
“Okay? And what about tonight?”
_________Or: Glinda's a bartender in a harbour town and Elphaba's a sailor at the whim of the sea. A situationship ensues (they're actually in love).

Galinda pushed her glasses up her nose. "Upland. Galinda Upland," she said, channeling every ounce of friendly energy she could. Elphaba did not seem like the type to warm up easily, and Galinda could not leave without her story. "I'm with OzCo Magazine."
"Hmm," Elphaba rounded her desk and sat back in her chair, folding her hands under her chin to study Galinda. "Shame. I thought you were a journalist."
"I'm a reporter," Galinda corrected, though sweetly. "That's why I'm here. To get your side of the story."
OR, Galinda is Supergirl, and Elphaba moves to National City to take over her father's disgraced company.

Elphaba isn’t superstitious; she doesn’t believe in magic or ghosts or the supernatural; she has always been wary of organized religion; she’s never understood the people who believe in fate. Some might say it’s cynical. But Elphaba just doesn’t get it - she likes logic and reason and believes that everything can be explained.
So the thump in her chest at the voice is confusing to her. The sudden sense that the world has shifted on its axis is confusing.
