    In Ships In The Night, Crowley -- keeping watch over his angel during the Blitz -- met an American airman in a London pub. What happened then was something he never expected, or intended.

    Eighty years later, he's retired and on his way to an ordinary seaside weekend with his husband, when an inadvertent detour brings them face to face again.

    It's awkward.

    His heart slammed back into place as the angel levered up on one hand, fretting “Oh bother, my best jacket,“ and brushing at an invisible smutch. “They’re all your best jacket,” Crowley tried to say, but his voice wouldn’t come.

    “Hello there,” said the greatcoated man, and he was a Yank right enough, reaching down to Aziraphale in what went from a hand up to a lingering handclasp. “Nice suit.”
