“You,” the man growls, hand tightening on the hammer grip fallen at his side, shoulders curling pushing himself to sitting, eyes glaring fever-bright through oily strands of hair falling over his brows.
“Me,” Jayce confirms, a little breathless, even though it wasn’t a question. He sits back on his heels. “Apparently.”

Zaun’s Machine Herald scoffs the first time he reads it, tossing the stained and torn paper that his apprentice brought down the conveyor behind his shoulder. He is rewiring his left arm again, trying to iron out why his sensors detect a microsecond’s delay between the synapses firing in his brain and the acknowledgement by his mechanical nerves.
“Natural causes,” he scoffs. “He is what? Sixty years old? Men that rich do not die that young.”

Then one summer evening, the church drops a half-starved stranger on his porch. Viktor- sharp-tongued, bird-boned and unrepentant- is the kind of man Jayce was raised to turn away from. But the mountains have a way of stretching out time and making space for things that don’t belong, and the more Viktor learns to live, the more he makes Jayce remember what he's spent years trying to forget.
