The butler’s teeth glint. Kaelix feels himself somehow shrink further down.
“What are you trying to do?” he gasps out. He’s half-expecting a reprimand on the clumsy way his words fall out, a reminder of courtesy with a slap too light to break anything. Zeal stays smiling. If that’s the case, courtesy doesn’t matter right now.
“Are you ordering anything from me, Young Master?”
Kaelix could say yes. He’s aware that he could, but it feels like an impossible option. Pushing Zeal away might as well be pushing away gravity. The curtains in the room hang open. Zeal’s words hang like a dagger an inch from his face. Kaelix shakes his head.
