Wei Ying pretends deafness for a moment. “What?” She looks at the shelter where Lan Zhan is leant over with her arms folded on the metal railing. “Oh, Lan Zhan? She’s um.”
She’s what? My neighbour’s niece. My neighbour’s niece who I enjoy knowing looks at me through my open curtains whenever possible. My friend, maybe. My friend who said yes when I asked her to come to my hockey game. She quirks her lips. “She’s a friend of mine.”
