The thing about making a key duplicate, especially from a cheap stall on the side of the road, is that the locksmith will take a random template of uncertain quality for your key. It can be smooth, it can be rusty, it can be sturdy, and it can be glossy. The point is, the key still opens the same door, its physical qualities barely matters, it always changes.

There wasn’t really a singular moment in which David realized that he wanted to die.
It was a gradual transition. Like a fish in a pot of slowly boiling water, not realizing that the heat was rising before it was too late. No, it started with simple carelessness. At first it felt almost like a joke he told himself. A private rebellion. Standing at the curb and thinking, If something happened, it wouldn’t be my fault.
Letting the thought brush past him, light as dust, and then continuing on. He didn’t want to die. He was certain of that. He just didn’t feel particularly invested in preventing it if it were to occur.
