Summary
Makino knows Luffy is more tomboyish, and that’s fine. Honestly, it makes outfits easier to salvage. She knows Luffy has odd interests, but she frankly does not care. If Luffy wants to catch beetles and ferry caterpillars from the path to a branch, then she can catch beetles and ferry caterpillars.
Makino has raised this child since she was a child herself. She knows Luffy, and Luffy knows her, as much as a five-year-old even can.
But right now, as Luffy sits in her favorite outfit with her knees pulled up to her chest on the steps of Party’s Bar even after Makino told her she could go play, Makino is finding that there are still some things she missed.
“Homi said that it’s bad to wear boy clothes, because then people will think I’m a boy when I’m not. Is that true?”

Summary
“Where’s the body?” asks the owner of the black boots, voice toneless.
Ace doesn’t blink. “I’m glad you weren’t there to see it, Sabo,” he tells the ghost. At least he thinks he does. “I still see it when I close my eyes. There was more hole than torso. Remember the first time we ever killed a man and we kept dreaming about it for months after? I’ve hardly slept a wink.”

Summary
His mother always said that they have the wings of angels. Their shimmery feathers are there to let the commoners know how insignificant they are compared to the nobles. Their wings are signs. They’re blessings.
Sabo just thinks they’re plain.
(wing au, but with a slight difference.)

Summary
At his sides are two boys with wings they can't use; two boys who, out of everyone else in the world, deserve to fly the most. They say they don't mind, that they can survive just fine without them, but Sabo sees the way their expressions dim whenever they try to stretch or gesture or even express emotions and are blocked by a constant ache.
When he sets out, Sabo is going to help his brothers heal, and he will stop at nothing to make it happen.
(sabo’s brothers can’t fly. he can. it never does leave his mind.)

Summary
When Sabo fails to speak, Ace turns and gives him a smile that's all teeth; mirthless. "It's people like us, 'Bo. The people that hang around the Terminal. We're nothing more than termites."
Vaguely, he remembers Ace telling him something like that a little after they'd become partners. He hadn't really understood it at the time, just that the word made Ace's childish face twist with disdain, so he'd disliked it as well on principle.
Now, Sabo understands perfectly. That budding dislike quickly graduates to hatred.
(snippets of the brothers’ lives after the sake ceremony, except the people are a little meaner, the universe is a little nicer, and sabo has a little more righteous anger stashed away for future use.)

Summary
Figarland is lying on the bed inside, left shoulder heavily padded, bandages wrapped around his chest and ribs. Shanks is sitting at the foot of his bed, slumped, right arm braced across his knees. They both look surprised to see Ace, though Shanks is a lot more open about it. But the captain recovers quickly, offering a small grin. “Hey, kiddo. You need something?”
Ace swallows. Darts a quick, wary glance at Figarland, whose expression has smoothed back out, before making himself focus just on Shanks. “What’s up with Benn? He’s got a different Stressed Face.”
A blink. And then a snort. “Stressed Face?”
“What else am I gonna call it,” Ace mutters, suddenly feeling like a kid,
giving Sabo a crash course on how to tell when Dadan was actually angry or just pretending.Series

Summary
“It’s called amnesia,” Dragon tells him, voice deep and slow and calm, but Ace’s head is still spinning regardless. “Nothing we’ve ever tried has broken through the memory loss, but- there’s always a chance at recovery. Especially with exposure to familiar things from before the inciting incident.”
Sabo shifts, a subtle slide of his weight from one leg to the other. He’s anxious, uncertain, trying not to show it. Ready to bolt at the slightest surprise, whether that’s a thug jumping them in the trash heaps or a tiger leaping out of the trees.
“You don’t have to stay,” Ace tells him, dully, the words coming out in a fog. He doesn’t need to make Sabo wait with him. He doesn’t. He’s spent ten years missing his first brother, but Ace has made do, and he isn’t about to force someone to stick around if they don’t know him, don’t have any reason to care-
“I don’t have anywhere else I need to be right now.”

His brother snorts, one hand unfolding from under his chin to reach and poke- to poke Ace’s knee, where Sabo has gotten him a hundred times, one warning pinch or another when he thought Ace was being dumb.
The lump gets too big to swallow past.

Summary
“I’ll take the little one.”
Sabo yells something behind his gag. Ace just snarls, mean as any tiger back home, and thrashes against the chains pinning him down. Luffy needs to struggle too, he needs to do something, but the stupid rock bands these guys clamped onto his arms are some kind of bad magic, making him feel exhausted even without moving at all.
